So when I got my 2g I failed to notice the rust starting on the passenger side of the trunk hatch right under the window. After about 2 years I finally got my act together and saved some money to take it to the body shop. I noticed by design that the water just sort of pools in the area because of how the trunk levels out and the way the glass sits beneath the weatherstrip.. now that I've spent my hard earned money to get it sanded, filled, and repainted is there ANYthing I can do to the area or something more I can use to help hold the weather strip down/stay in place? I was thinking additional clear coat but I'm not sure if it would do any good.. I asked the body shop and they said there might be some kind of foam sealant I may be able to use but I've never heard of such a thing. I can post pictures tomorrow but I'm stuck with the mobile site till then.

The 2g's are bad about this. Mine has a little rust from the same thing, puddle of water inside the trim. I pulled my spoiler off, and put marine rtv around the mounting holes as that seemed to be where water was coming in the most. Make sure the rear wiper is sealed up real good too, I just deleted mine.

I honestly gave up hope on fixing this design flaw, and ditched it for a Vis Carbon fiber hatch, ~1000 bucks later there's nothing to rust with no more metal, I lost a few pounds in the back, and hopefully I can have heated glass if I can find a place to ground the heater LOL

I did consider carbon fiber but I love my paint and if I did carbon fiber I'd have to save for a bit to get it swapped and painted. The rust is/was on the exterior by the way. It's hard to describe but once I'm on a computer tomorrow I'll post before and after pics. The mobile site won't let me. :(

So these are the pictures of my rust taken about a year ago vs the finished repair. The last picture shows my concern on where the water sits on both sides of the weather strip.

Maybe put some type of silicone in between the weatherstrip and the metal..that might help..i could be wrong tho
Yeah I can get some good silicone, I just want to find something that'll last and not end up with a mess that just ends up drying up and peeling away. I'm thinking either that or some type of safe to use glue..

May sound crazy but what aboiut clear nail polish? Really what you need is something clear that you can apply over that area and I'd say nail polish just because it's easy to find, it hardens, and it's easy to apply with the fine tip...clear coat might also work..but if out it over the weather strip body and glass

Think that stuff would be good to use on both the glass and paint or just on the paint? I feel like if water sits on the glass side it could seep under the weather strip.

So 2 months after the fix were back at square one, the rust is back and bubbling the fresh paint.. now I turn to fiberglass/carbon fiber. A lot of what I see is only a difference in name and price so my next question, to those who wish to put their 2 cents in, is what is a good brand? Any big noticeable difference in fit or quality between them? And lastly if anyone on the east coast side knows of a good performance shop or someone familiar with fitting aftermarket hatches. The first is most recent from today and the second is from exactly 1 week ago.

IMO, I would take it back to them to have the work re done. IMO it shouldn't have that issue if they did the sealant....also I'm no professional at painting a car but I don't think it should rust up if they pulled the glass and trim out.

I agree. Take that back and get it redone properly or get a refund. If it took 20 years to happen the first time, it shouldn't have happened again in 2 months. I have had a dozen coupes, but never had this problem, though.

I did take it back today and they essentially told me I was sol and they couldn't cut the metal out because they wouldn't be able re-seal the glass right. The process from my understanding did include taking the glass and everything out but either way they basically told me the don't guarantee rust and pretty much left it at that. But I'm with you about the whole "20 years the first time" thing.

Mine has a very small bubble in this area, its garaged most of its life so its not a massive issue but it is annoying still,

The company should covee this reguarless of if it will or wont seal, a good job would hold it off for longer then a few months

Yeah they were willing to take it on for my money but when I returned with an issue the cat somewhat came out of the bag and they admitted they usually do insurance work which usually doesn't cover rust.

Well unfortunately what's done is done and they offered all they're going to offer, which is mixing up more paint and touching it up and that obviously won't do anything for the rust. And honestly even if they did offer to re-do it, I'm not sure it would be any better another 2 months later so I'd rather not waste the time and money. Before I even dropped it off to have it done I was considering carbon fiber just to be safe and look where I ended up anyways, this scenario just solidified that decision. So if anyone has any good recommendations on hatches or body shops in the east coast area would be greatly appreciated. I know of a few but none that are familiar with aftermarket parts and fitting them correctly. I see a lot of VIS products on different websites which seems to be the way to go but they range from about $700-$1000, is there a more reputable/trusted website then others or just shop for price and shipping time? Any input or suggestions would be a huge help as well as fitment information. The body shop that did the repairs is no longer of any help and they won't be getting anymore of my business.

All I can say is stay away from carbon creations. After doing a ton of research on cf hoods I chose their hood because of customer service, and recent reviews. I don't know if they sent me old stock but it looks like crap. I had an insurance check so it didn't cost me anything but I still hate it. They only gave me a $50 refund (I ordered through cfh) for a chip in the clear coat and the lack of wiper nozzle holes (they were there in the stock photo, I wouldn't care except there's dimples in the hood where they're supposed to go), but overall it's bad quality. Many imperfections in the weave and gel/ clear coat give it an uneven appearance. Only looks good from 10' away and not in the sunlight.
Maybe my hood is just old stock (all cf hoods, hatches, etc are drop shipped by the manufacturer so just go with the best price) but there's no controlling what you get.
I've heard about fitment issues with vis hatches, GRNDSM is selling one on classifieds I'm sure he'll tell you how it fits. Just stay away from CC products.

That sucks about the rust issue. For future stubborn rust spots coat it with POR15. I've had great success with it holding up for a few years now in various spots, though none are in plain view like yours. Sometimes it's not practical to cut and remove all the rust so it's like a band aid for cancer, but a band aid nonetheless.

Thank you! This is one of the only helpful answers so far. Good to know everything is drop shipped so it really doesn't matter who you order from. I know nothing will be perfect as far fitment but I'm willing to pay someone to make it look good or as best as possible so it won't be too much of an issue as long as the hatch isn't too malformed. I really appreciate the response! I'll look into the one from GRNDSM.

My trunk shocks are shot XD with the way they lay in the drainage ditch and my plans to replace the trunk I haven't bothered to replace them yet. The wiper I can deal without as I hardly use it (plus rainx works wonders) but I gotta have my banana!
Vis carbon hatch fits like stock, just may want to fatigue your struts quite a bit.
When you say "fits like stock" do you just mean that it just uses the same brackets or that the fitment is good as in minimal modifications to get it to look right? (body lines and such)
