I notice more and more when I go to Tuner type shows, I always have 20 yrs or so on most of the crowd there, how many other almost 50 yr old DSM dudes do we have on here and what keeps you hanging on to the DSM way of life?

34, so you've got some years on me. A lot of the "new" crew is pretty damn sad IMHO. Most of the young guys don't want to learn or have the attention span to build something that isn't a cookie cutter Subaru any more.

I guess I've been with it long enough to know what this place used to be and have these hanging in my garage from 2002 or so...

I didn't get my first DSM until 2009 or so, possibly '10, but I'd been around them for years prior.

I'm 48 and bought my first one in 1992. I do it because I dont know any other car out there that performs this well for this cheap and retaining daily drive ability. I have logged probably 350k miles on dsms and I can drive it rain sleet snow or shine. The only problem I have now is they are unrestorable. Certain parts simply arent available and I fear the cars will just eventually fade away never to return like muscle cars did.

Well Hell.....am I the OLD FART????
53. ROFL
Got into them because I got "stuck" with one and had to figure the dam thing out.
I've been building cars for 40 years and YES I am called "Pops" by some of my young friends (that know my car wups some ass when called upon).
Now I have a DD DSM so I can enjoy it MILD or WILD.
I have 5 of these little monsters now from 1990 to 1998.
Marty :p

39 here. This was my first car since high school that my dad bought me back in 1995. Had a lot of memories with the car and a lot of nostalgia just thinking about reading every post in the Talon Digest and trying to learn as much about the car. I just can't even imagine selling it or getting rid of it. Even my wife calls my Talon my first wife.

I'm 38 I bought my first one in 2000, I got out of it back in 2008 because around my town it was nothing but rice boys with beat uo civics so I went back to muscle cars, but the crowd has changed again and since I come back to this page every once in awhile I've been getting the itch for another Talon.

I'll be 34 in two weeks. Loved these cars as a kid because they looked cool even though I didn't know a thing about them. Been playing with them now for 14 years. Just don't feel as comfortable in another car.

I concur!!! Thanks for clearing that up, I was getting worried....and I forgot I was only 20, see how this works? LOL

Wow, so I am not the only "old geezer" (48) still addicted to these cars that were IMHO way before/ahead of their collective time.. I remember wanting a gold 90 laser so bad that I could taste it right after they came out.. I am now the proud owner of a 6/4 combo 92 AWD Laser now and the looks and WTF I get from most people is worth it's weight in gold..(Um, oh it is a Plymouth Laser, I have never even heard of those)..

I can only hope that someday, these cars will hit a niche and become a collector type car, I highly doubt it however..

So I guess that makes me 20 with 46 years experience. Where did all the time go?
{You'll never guess my very first car tee, hee - a 1966 Sunbeam Alpine!}.
There seems to be a few of us still wrenching or keeping the spirit alive. I'm relatively new with a DSM but somehow I have Lasers, TSI's and GSX's growing here on the farm! I'm glad you are on here for sure! (cause now I have an Elder) LOL.
My first car was a non running 1955 Ford 2 door Custom. Mom helped me put points and plugs in and said, "Don't ever let your dad help cause if a hammer can't fix it, it can't be fixed according to him"....I was 13. God bless them both LOL.
So you had one of these???

Age is your state of mind. As for my body, it's 57 ;)

Been wrenching and rebuilding cars since I was 8. Mostly GM and AMC. My son picked up his first DSM 6 years ago, as a shell and several boxes of parts. We enjoyed the challenge of learning the engineering uniquness of DSMs.

After he cycled through a couple more DSMs, I got the bug, and bought one to rebuild/restore for my wife, as a daily.

We have made many friends in the DSM world, and have all those wrenching hours and build strategy sessions as a father and son bond.

We certainly can relate to the noobs that are baffled by the simplest of things, so we enjoy relating our solutions to them.

Recently, while discussing my latest modification plans of "our" DSM, my wife asked me, "Who's car is this anyway?"

Looks like we'll be adding one more...

In it's day that was a neat little sports car. I hope you aren't 6'8 and 250, it might be cramped. Cool!!!
My 19 year old knew what it was when I showed him. He helps me on the DSM's but knew it from a dam video game. He did call it a Tiger tho. :thumb:
