In 2009, I bought my 1g back that I owned in high school. Well because of "life happns" the car has sat and I've literally put 5 miles on the car since it's purchase. I've spent a lot of time working on it though.
Owner made a lot of claims during the purchase, but could never verify as he had no paper trail. Also, I questioned whether these parts and mods were done to the engine because the engine bay and bolt ons seemed lower grade than when I sold it to him two years prior.
Fast forward 8 years. Many things I've noticed since that have made me feel like he was bluffing about the money he dumped into the motor just kept piling up. However, now I look back and it's all been builder error and bolt one a he got laxed on.
So, 8 years later and 5 miles on the engine. I find myself doing a timing belt(he put the wrong length oil pan bolt under the crank. So go and get a new timing belt and come to find out that one of the timing tensioner bolts was stripped. Which eventually other dsm friends convinced me while having a dsm meet at my place. To just pull the valve cover and drop the pan. Which turned into the motor and trans being removed.
This is where the header comes into play. I was able to actually find upgrades he didn't mentions which was nice.
Dropped the oil pan and found two of four oil squirters in oil pan, I was able to remove the third by hand. Out of all this money he supposedly spent he didn't spend the $60 for a balance shaft elimination kit. Removed the trans and found he replaced the ACT 2600 I had with a 6 puck sprung clutch but as far as anyone can tell. It's a no name eBay clutch. He didn't even spend the $55 for a new friction plate for the fidanza flywheel I had in it. All of it was clearly used or what I gave him. To boot, one of the dowl pins fell out and damaged the bell housing and flywheel. The list of negatives goes on.
However, this is where it gets interesting. He seemed to fail at doing some of the most basic dsm 101 upgrades or mods that have been known since the start.
On the flip side, his claims were for the most part true!
-new head
-arp head studs(installed wrong)
-revised lifters
-arp main studs
-all new timing belt pulleys,tensioner,etc
-water pump
-oil pump front cover
-eagle chromoly 100mm stroker crank
-eagle h beam rods
-arias pistons
-new everything oil system wise
I priced it all out and just in the bottom end he put a good 2500 into that and that's not the top end..... but couldn't do a balance shaft elimination or such simple things. It was like he went on extreme psi and just started clicking.
Now I'm in the middle of undoing all the damage...... my rant is over and if a mod would like to move this thread to where it should be. Thank you!
