You shouldn't really mess with them unless your really doing piston to valve clearance and everything and wanting a specific cam LSA. A lot of big powered 4g63's are just degreed at "0" making lots of good power.
 
I agree it shouldn't be played with too much unless proper tools are to be had, but how is someone to learn without experimenting? I'd only play with a few cam degrees. Yes, I know it's dangerous, but it's a personal risk I'm willing to take. But what would be the difference between changing the LSA versus changing the relation of the cams to the crank?
