Couldn't find a thread on this so.....

Did you hear?

Photobucket is "ransoming" our photos. Well kind of....

They updated their TOS very recently and now they want $40/mnth if you are linking your photos too a 3rd party site (ie dsmtuners).

My build thread is now trashed. Even if I switched hosting sites to go through 1600 photos across 8 pages of my build and know what is what (since you can't see the photos anymore...even on the photobucket site most just show the "ransom" meassge)

WTF. :(

That's insane. Why were you using a hosting site? Can't you just compress the files to fit the site's max requirements?

Originally when I started my build thread it was before the site update and it suggested using photobucket as the host.

That's the danger of hosting photos on an external site for build threads, how-to articles, and any other info that is valuable in a forum thread. If the photos aren't posted as attachments they might disappear at some point, and a lot of the time they do. That's why we always advise that all photos be uploaded as attachments instead of referenced as links elsewhere. I'll see if I can find a solution.

I do some pics on evom that say "temporarily dissabled" third party hosting. you cant see pic in thread. but you can see them by clicking message from photobucket

Seen this same thread on a few forums lately where some guys are getting the message and others are not having problems. So it is odd because it doesnt seem to be affecting all accounts the same. I dont know what the criteria is or how they are picking and choosing who gets hit with the ransom but if it is happening to some I think we can rest assured its only a matter of time before it is all.

Hey Jerry, actually, all of the photos that are displayed in your 94 Summit build thread are being hosted as attachments here on the site. But if you click on those images you're taken to photobucket to see the originals. Take a look:
http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/my-first-a-t-built-car.498590/

Right click on any of the photos, then click "open image in new tab" or check the properties - you'll see a DSMtuners URL in the address bar.

This is because I installed a plugin a couple years back that imports a copy of any hot-linked images when a reply or new thread is posted to prevent externally linked/hosted images from eventually breaking, or situations like this one where those hosted photo sites decide to start charging. The only images that were not imported and are affected by this situation were ones that were missed in a site-wide import about 2-3 years ago. But I will be working on another import here in the coming weeks that should fix all images.

It's likely happening to all. See my reply above to learn why it's not affecting all hot-linked images on this site.

awe well. shows how much I know about computer tech. good to know my threads will survive. but will suck to loose access to all those photos if it does happen.

I had the same problem with photo bucket, but I backed my images up before they sent me the ransom note LOL I put them on an external drive, just in case this was to happen, if you can still look at your photos on photo bucket you can back them up, thats likely your best bet man.

Bummer. Quite a few build threads and how tos are broken. I was just enthralled to browse a head rebuild step by step and the knowledge has been held for ransom!

Just FYI to everyone who posted concerns here in this thread - most, if not all threads that had Photobucket images linked (and were showing the dreaded Photobucket message) should now be repaired and images should be showing as they were before, assuming the PB account owners didn't go in and delete their accounts/photos in Photobucket. If the photos are still in Photobucket they should now be displaying in the threads. If you find some that are not, point me to those posts please.

It's of little importance since these are old build journals and I no longer have the cars, but there are still pictures that aren't visible on these pages, and I was bored at work so I had time to look through it all.

Just an update to say that the script finally ran and updated 10's of thousands of external links, importing them as attachments, including several thousand Photobucket images. Hopefully all of those PB graphics are now gone. If you come across any, PM me so I can investigate. What the script didn't fix is any external image links that were broken - pointing to image files that no longer exist. Nothing we can really do about that.
