They're on wholesaler closeout, private label package. $25for standard and about $27 for autos, no core charge. The brand is reliance automotive or something, came in a "Ultra energy gold" box from 2005. I had it tested first (I always do even if I just bought it, as I've already had one dead in the box), installed and works great. There's only a few left!!

I'm glad to hear it's working out for you! I decided to give the same starter a shot (For 2g auto). Package arrived yesterday, the grey box was smashed up pretty good on one side, but I don't see any damage to the starter. I will have it tested, but I wont be able to get it on the car for another couple weeks as there's a lot of work that needs to be done. I will report my experience with it also! Rock Auto must have got their hands on a few more, they're showing 19 remaining for 5 speeds.

I bought a starter from them, it was junk, replaced it with another and it was just as useless. I now went with a Bosch and that's been good so far, all because a bolt thread stripped on my original that was still working just fine.

As of a couple days ago the manual starter was back to $13. This thing's been holding up fine; got a backup and it tested good, my buddy's is good too.

Almost all starters are hit or miss, whether reman or new. Bosch are more expensive but seem to have a better success rate. Ive bought many starters from various places over the years and it's astonishing how many are DOA. Usually if it's good out of the box it will stay working.
Parts store guys give me an attitude sometimes when I want the product I just bought tested. If they knew what a PITA changing a starter on these cars was (especially if it's close to stock, holy crap I forgot how much crap you have to maneuver around) they'd understand. Also why starters and alts I usually don't order through the mail (but at this price can't be beat and RA has an excellent return/refund policy) as they tend to break. Poor Stevie Miller had to send me three different alternators a few years ago because they were arriving broken after being tested good.

Just following up:

I've had a lot of set backs, but was finally able to get the car up and running for a bit. I've probably started the car between 20-30 times, and have had no issues at all with the starter. Car fires right up! About 70 miles on the car at the moment. I'll post if I run into any issues with it from here on out.

This is the 2g auto starter btw.

Car is put away for the winter, but put maybe 3-4k miles on it with the new starter, seems like at time it almost get "hung up" and doesn't engage the teeth on the TQ converter. It will get it after another try, but yeah I will be getting another stock one at some point.
