yea i tried doing some research but everything that I'm seeing with the serial numbers starts with 49, my numbers start with 48 i can't seem to match it up with any specific part number

If you look closely, I believe the digit in question is still a 9 instead of an 8. Look at the last digit in the first sequence, which without question is an 8.

Turbine housing is the same type that is used on an Evo III 16G...the rest of the turbo appears to be a Big 16G by the "thicker" hub area to the compressor wheel, and it's been built or serviced at some point by Texas Rebuild as indicated by the "TR" stamped in the compressor housing underneath the outlet flange. The number on the housing could be 01420, 01450, or 01460 with that compressor wheel. If it were 48178-01460 (Evo II 16G) on the cover, it's possible that it came from Mitsubishi with that turbine housing installed.

That wastegate actuator setup is very hokey- I'd be surprised if this thing has any boost control whatsoever with as weak as the bracketry is. Replace that garbage with a regular 14B/16G actuator before use.

Ok thank you for the replys this helps a lot, I paid 200 for the setup the guy gave me the turbo, o2 housing, and the oil feed line. Was that a good buy? He did say it was just rebuilt.

Also what type of wastegate actuator would you guys recomend? A Mitsubishi one or aftermarket. ? Thanks

Yea that's also what I was wondering. If I could just get a 16g bracket to mount the actuator on? Or is it a cheap brand that I should replace

Fair....definitely hasn't been rebuilt anytime recently unless whoever did the work did absolutely no cleanup.

OEM is always best....I've seen rusty 14B actuators from 25 years ago that still do their job just fine, and I've seen new Chinese replacements that leaked through the diaphragm from day 1.

Just get a complete OEM actuator, bolt it on, and be done.

Trying to figure out exactly what this turbo is. It came off of a porsche 944, the car over boosted when the waste gate ref. blew off and the turbo started making a strange noise after. I expect the turbine came apart and destroyed itself from the 30+psi spike it saw.

The chra looks like an air research t3 turbo that has been "upgraded" to a t3/t4 using a Chinese compressor wheel and housing. But it also has a turbonetics exhaust housing.

It this even worth trying to have repaired? Or is this just scrap and needs to be replaced with a real garrett turbo.

I have a question, I bought my 1g tsi awd with a precision 6262 turbo on it but i guess my question is, is there anyway to tell if it's journal bearing or ball bearing just by looking at it?

is there a way to look it up by its serial number ?
not sure man, but I just pulled my motor literally 20 mins ago so when I tear it down tmrw I'll look more into it and see what I can find and post results back here if any are worth while

Hello,

Can I get a confirmation that the turbo in the pic is indeed a 14b ? This is currently on my 94 Eagle Talon TSI AWD, that I have recently purchased.

Also looking for any resources describing a 14b to 16g upgrade.

Thx!

Yes it is a 14b turbo. As far as the 16g upgrade you just need a kit like this:

Please don't post misinformation.

OP has a 1g. Ergo no "16g install kit" is needed, it will bolt in exactly as the 14b does.

Looks like it. Either that or an HX52. I can't really tell.

You know Vegas.. with gems like those I'm gonna start following you on here..

To the OP - Run the numbers on the turbo. If you don't know how to do that go to google type in "site:dsmtuners.com turbo ID numbers"

It will provide you with all the information you could ever want as far as being able to know what you have. This thread is going to get merged with the turbo ID thread needlessly because you didn't search beforehand.

Definitely a 14b. Id recommend shopping for a 16g and keep that as a spare. It will come in handy down the road, trust me. My rule with dsm's is have 2 of everything on hand!

Your right. I work on my 2g so much I just get stuck in the mindset. Honest mistake.

While you are right he should have done some simple searching, I ran the numbers from the picture and it is a 14b

No I did too, but since it was already stated correctly twice before I got to the thread it seemed redundant.. Yeah you 2gs forget 1g stuff. Us 1g guys forget 2g stuff.. it happens LOL

Agreed LOL. I go back and forth between my girlfriends 1g and my 2g a lot so it all runs together haha.

Wanna see if this thing seems legit, it's local to me for a decent deal, but the wastegate and turbine housing have me curious if it's just a chebay 16g with legit compressor cover. Supposedly only has 2k miles on it.

Can't read the numbers really, but I can always go look at it and see what I can discern.
