Hi,

I've been digging though stale posts for hours now attempting to find an answer to my alternator question. Quite a few posts on this topic out there...

I have a 2.4l (4g64) / 1g head built stroker in a 98 GSX that I am currently installing megasquirt on. I also have this shiny, new, and working 90amp Bosch alternator from a 2g automatic I bought awhile back sitting on a relocation kit behind the engine. Obviously, ditching the 2g ECU also means ditching the field regulation to the alternator; seems like changing the unit out would be easiest.

I purchased an external regulator for a new alternator in anticipation of this ( similar to one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Standard-Motor-Products-VR125T-Regulator/dp/B004BTON72 ).

Been digging around, and I can't find any information on this Saturn alternator swap that definitively says that it is an INTERNALLY or EXTERNALLY regulated unit? Can someone point me to the part number or model years of GM vehicle that would be suitable?

Few criteria I'm looking for also:

1.) It needs to remain on re-locator kit in old AC compressor spot
2.) I'd prefer an externally regulated unit as I'm sick of replacing shitty service grade alternators (which seems to be most replacement parts on the market anymore :/ )
3.) If there's an easier option out there, I'm open to any suggestions!

Thanks for the help :)

Run it as a one wire and be done. Give the car one quick rev on start up to excite it. Problem solved, no money spent, and you are not holding the charging system back.

hm, really? I haven't heard of this. You can flash the field just by ripping on the throttle?

As far as field regulation goes, wouldn't this cause erratic output voltage during operation?

If it really is this simple, heh, it will have made my day

I'm looking over the prints of the 2g alternator regulation circuit...how exactly would this "one wire" method work? I'm not quite seeing it

Were you able to workout a solution using externally regulator? I am also tired of having to replaced burnt regulators...

Thanks

Wow thats a cheap alternative to going with an alternator! Wish I could have done that instead of the Galant 90amp, few more amps for a good price!
