Recently the seals on my 50 trim blew. Without a lot of money burning a hole in my pocket, I found myself looking at cheaper turbos. So until I can purchase a precision or other ball bearing/billet turbo, I've decided to jump the gun on an ebay special of the GT3582.

Link can be found here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/XS-Power-GT...ash=item1c76f2d3d0:g:WFcAAOSwMstYRDMQ&vxp=mtr

Will be keeping this thread updated with my experience with the quality and overall usage. The car will be daily driven so we should be seeing some results fairly quickly. If you're not familiar with my build don't hesitate to check out my build profile!

Thanks for checking in guys. I was not aware that there was already a post, guess I shoulda searched. But then again, everyone's experience is different so I'll update if you all are interested.

Crazy thing is I have seen some Ebay turbos makes some real power. Not sure how long they last but some can get you some nice hp numbers.

No idea how much I'll make on it, I'm weary of pushing the car because I didn't build it and have no idea what the bottom end is.

Actually, it's a question I've been meaning to ask... The bottom end was supposedly rebuilt and the bored out .20 over. Are there oversized oe pistons or would they have most likely dropped in some forged? If I were the one doing the build and spending the 3-5k they probably did building the head... I would've built the bottom end as well.

If you treat it like a journal bearing and dont boost it much it may live for a bit.

Only looking for a few months of life out of it until I can piece together a better fuel system and of course turbo setup. I'm going to run it to the ground either way so I'll throw at it whatever makes my car happy xD

Much love from NY in this thread though, you guys know of any meetups? New to the DSM community and would love to be a part of it locally.

Yes you can get oversized factory replacement pistons (idk about OEM necessarily).

If you pull the turbo apart before install and ensure its clean, the lube it well, I don't see why it couldn't last a few thousand miles.

Means a lot! Turbo goes on friday.

I'm tempted to pull the plugs and try and see if I can see anything at tdc. But there's really no way to know whats down there unless I pull it apart.
Rebuilt 6k miles ago according to the P.O. If the car lasts me, I'm gonna put together a built shortblock and throw the head on it. Do these heads/blocks need machine work when taking a foreign head? I know its always a good idea but for example you can throw a diff model head on a m20 short block, arps and cometic and call it a day.

You should be able to see a number in the top of the piston. Stock replacement should read "63dt" and the possibly a ".5" right in the top of the piston. It's usually easy to see as long as carbon buildup isn't too bad. Generally aftermarket pistons will have a part number in the top as well that can identify them.

Either way, you shouldn't have to disassemble the engine to find what pistons are in it.

The biggest cylinder head differences are 1g vs 2g head bolt holes, 1gs have 12mm and 2gs have 11mm. There are other heads that will fit and are almost indistinguishable, such as various Hyundai heads.
A head mill is wise, but you want to check the surfaces with a straight edge, as you may not need to mill them. If using a MLS hg you will want the surface finish to be fine, around 20 or lower RA, so without a milling of at least the head, composite gaskets are a better choice. Fel-pro permatorque gaskets have a pretty good rep when combined with arp head studs.

Save money and buy a cheap turbo that may grenade and cost you a motor? I never understood this logic, and still don't. Hell, you probably could have had @JusMX141 rebuild your 50 trim for $350.

You know what they say...Play stupid games win stupid prizes.

I'm interested to see how this turns out, I just hope you don't end up worse off than before.

Dude, eBay has really stepped up their manufacturing nowadays :)

I won't be dragging the car or pushing it way beyond its means. I'm not throwing that away as a possibility whatsoever, but given the fact that it's a temporary replacement and me driving respectfully the chances of it happening is significantly less.

Been down that road....

Cliffnotes- new knockoff 35R which was sold as a ball bearing unit was actually journal bearing and lasted 400 miles.

Good luck....no GT3582R I've ever seen came with an 8-blade compressor, so who knows what you're actually getting.

Read a bit through your thread and saw the results. The seller on ebay has a fair amount of reputation and they also run a legitimate site for their products. I'd probably put them in the category of CX Racing. Interested to see how it holds up, I'll probably check for shaft play every 2 fillups or so.

Doesn't matter who's selling it- China built it...some vendors will sell items at a higher price and offer a better warranty giving the buyer a higher sense of security.

If the wheel specs in the listing are accurate, it's not even close to a GT35R:

China said:
Compressor Inducer: 57.36 Exducer: 81.87 Turbine Inducer: 73.60 Exducer: 57.50

GT35R's are 61.4/82mm on the compressor and 68/62mm on the turbine....so you're 0 for 1 on the item actually being what it's described as in the listing and you haven't even installed it on the car yet. For what you paid you could've gotten an actual CXRacing turbo with the correct GT35R wheel specs which is described in the listing to be ball bearing instead of a known journal bearing unit with whatever wheels they felt like installing.

Of course it's all china stuff. Don't think I'm trying to sell these ebay turbos in any kind of light as more than they are. I'm well aware what I've purchased is not close to a real GT35r and maybe it's not the same specs as CX's product. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if the specs are not perfect with what they advertised in the listing. When the product arrives at my door I can take some measurements and report back.

To be quite honest, the Talon is my daily right now and I searched for what would be at my door the fastest. This turbo happened to be oil cooled, 5 bolt flange and Fast Free shipping to my door by this Friday. So let's see how the results come out and if other members find themselves in a similar situation, they'll know whether to steer clear of this turbo or buy it as a bandaid. It's a gamble with these companies regardless.

XS Power is branded under SSautochrome and you can find more details and pictures at the link here. Scroll down to the second product on the page. http://www.ssautochrome.com/level.itml/icOid/2446

Either way, come Friday what we see is what we get!

So turbo has been fitted and I've driven about 50 miles now. First impressions, all the ebay bells and whistles... the placard says Turbocharger for christ's sake. Haven't messed with my tune at all and it needs fuel added in the top end, but the build quality seemed alright. Zero shaft play from what I can tell but as I put more miles on the car I'll keep updating. Once I add fuel and start pushing the turbo we'll see how it holds up. I was seeing AFR's in the high 11's when I gave it a half throttle pull and spool came around 4800rpm and didn't push it for long only till around 5500rpm.

He already ran a 10.1 at 150 and missing 3rd gear :)

Lmaoooooo.

Update, 500 miles on the turbo now.... Not seeing more shaft play than when I first put the turbo in.
Played with my tune and have it running rich enough, seeing 10.5 from 5k to redline.. I could probably back off the fuel a bit to get to 11.0/.5 but this works for now.

I wouldn't recommend this turbo to anyone who wants instant spool, or looking to make any low end power. The car doesn't come alive until 5200rpm, you get no tq and no power at all. Which is great for staying out of boost and cruising around town. I'm on 25psi right now, by the time you get going you're already at triple digit speeds.

It feels to me like the turbo is begging for more boost, for my application it's not feasible because I'm maxed out on timing seeing just the slightest 1 blink wot flash in 4th (on an off day) of .7 deg in my logs. Once I build my bottom end and get some bigger injectors in there I'll bump up the boost and ride the turbo until it's last legs. But I'm impressed for what it is honestly, for $300 you can go fast. But for how long? Stay tuned to find out.
