They have a prototype mustang 2.3 turbo running one in Europe. The prototype runs a larger than stock primary(?) turbo coupled with the ebooster and is said that from a dig, even with the bigger regular turbo, response is similar to the coyote v8 they tested it against.
I thinks it's pretty amazing, in a DSM it might be tough to package though.
Anyone else have thoughts?

Cool idea but I bet it's going to be very expensive. I bet that it wouldn't run on a regular 12v , so your going to have the added complexity of a secondary charger of some sort and battery pack.
 
Pretty interesting, my question for a DSM application would be how to control it. I doubt it would simply be activated by the pressure of the primary turbo. Seems like it would need to be controlled by the ECU with multiple parameters, like the egr/fps controls in link.
 
Watch the video shows how it works. Bw turbos usually have built in map sensors and I believe iat on some. I'm sure it works with those and other sensors. And why would you need more Power to run this it's not electric. It works off the airflow from the main turbo. It's pretty much like a turbo with 2 compressors.
 
Looks like an electric motor to me, of it wasn't what would power it. The other turbo spinning it by blowing in it wouldn't make it build much boost if any.
Edit: from the bw website "This electrically assisted charging system uses a flow compressor driven by an electric motor placed as a component before or after the turbocharger" I'm sure it would run on 12v, why would they make it anything else? But our charging systems aren't exactly great. As for a map sensor controlling it, it seems to me like it would also need to be controlled based on TPS position, load, rpm, speed etc. Especially if this is something they're marketing toward OEMs.

It looks like Borg Warner is testing the e-Booster in two versions:
12 Volt - 2KW
48 volt - 5KW

The 12 volt - 2KW version won't get you very far, in fact even the 48 volt - 5KW version isn't that powerful.

It's somewhat long @ 15 pages but covers a lot of different aspects and problems. It covers everything from the basic concept to an (almost) working prototype. If he gets the balance problems worked out, he'll have a working model that should be commercially available.

It uses a custom built 10KW, 48 volt electric motor that spins a GT3582 compressor wheel at 75,000 RPM with direct drive (no gears).

Electronic superchargers are not really an option on our cars since it's a 12v system with some pretty crappy wiring and alternator. However, expect to see more of these on the road soon due to new vehicles using 48v systems. The Audis SQ7 is already on the road with 3 turbos (2 exhaust driven and one electric) using a standard 12v battery along side a 48v system and lithium battery.
