I've been noticing the new fad for our cars is to get this front lip.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/For-97-99-M...ash=item4af82e6c0e:g:iMMAAOSwKtlWqUwW&vxp=mtr

I was wondering how functional this lip was in terms of aerodynamics? I don't know too much about aero but I understand that F1 cars have a front splitter that works in tandem with an undertray and rear diffuser to create downforce. Will it straighten the air out under my car? Will it at least divert more air through my intercooler/radiator/engine bay? Or will it be just unnecessary weight? No idea how much it weighs.

My car obviously isn't that serious but I don't want to put this lip on just for show, I would like it to be functional as well. Any thoughts?

I have that lip on my car it's not functional at all. It weighs maybe a pound but it's very flexible and the bumper is flexible. All the splitters I've seen on track cars are very thin and stiff, and have beams running over the top to keep them from flexing. They're also really low to the ground and are smooth underneath to channel the airflow.

Did you not read the reviews? They say it fits like sh!t

If you are looking for function look for an actual splitter, not a lip. Even then i think you are looking at a custom piece, a quick google search didn't show any production "time attack" style splitters

Thanks for your response JDT.

Yeah I read that one review. It was most likely user error. I was just wondering if this lip had any benefits at all performance wise from ppl who own it. JDT said its very flexible, which is good to know.

57 sold... :toobad:

Not sure what's up with that review, I didn't buy mine from that specific seller but I'm sure they're all from the same factory. It's narrower than the bumper but it doesn't take much to stretch it wide enough to fit. I took extra time aligning mine so it matches perfectly with the bumper. I'm not even much of a body guy, if that guy in the review works at a body shop and couldn't figure out how it fit then I wouldn't want to take my car to his shop.

Also I scraped the crap out of mine and my car isn't even lowered, glad I didn't buy the carbon fiber one.

What's the problem?

No problem. It doesn't look horrible on your car, I'll say that.

$98 bucks buys a lot of these, though...

...Out of 57 DSMers, how many of them you wanna bet bought the splitter first?

Good question, I can't answer that but I'm sure it's a scary amount. I'll tell you what though, whoever buys my car next is going to be lucky because I spent an hour driving around trying to find the correct oil filter.

At least when their engine seizes it'll look good sitting in the driveway with the splitter on. :D

Answer = NO.

is anything for a dsm really a perfect fit? if so it wouldn't be for many of us.

I have one and love it. Mines fits perfectly; but thats because im not a retarded baby, so i made brackets to ensure it fits securely.

But seriously , why would you ask that....... PSI i agree only because an alarming amount of members have diluted dreams of grandeur and all but ignore the most important part; being maintenance.

If you are seriously looking for functional aero you could contact Andrew Brilliant http://www.amb-aero.com/

I doubt that another run of his awesome aero kit will ever be released but if you are willing to spend the money on real honest to god actual aero stuff for a 2G that is the way to go.

Fitting it was horrible i had to use a heat gun because it was warpped. Wish i would have taken pictures of that but i like it and i dont care what people think.

Edit. I also wanna add that i had to chop off about 1 1/2 inches because it was to long. The one end was almost touching my tire.

If you have the time and a heat gun to remold it id say go for it.

I have this lip, no fitment issues. I put rivnuts in the bottom of my bumper and use 1/4-20 thumb screws to keep it on, makes for quick uninstall if you're going somewhere with sketchy roads.

And yes, I have multiple cases of oem filters and VR1 on the shelf, I haven't cut any corners on this car but I do like some cosmetic work as well, it's no different then spending $250 on professional tint.

I think this lip looks very well on your 2g jdxnc.
1g cars doesn't have lips that look beautiful as that.
Maybe i will be stoned for saying that: i did mine with a front lip from mk3 vw golf cl.
Never had bad comments about this lip. And this lip is VEERRYYY flexible. The fitting wasn't easy, lots of stainless steel screws, cuts, and artistic sense to have it look decent.
For your records, I do my oil change every 4000km (2500 miles) with amsoil.

i nwas thinking of doing the "home depot" lip on the side skirts to finish the look on the sides any opinions? its a cheaper way to get the look instead of the carbonnetics side skirts
Nah you'll end up doing it twice, at a minimum. this time then the right way a second time. Check out the cool subaru side skirts modded to the 2g.
