Seems like everyone has a 16g on their DSM and it would be interesting to see how many people choose a 16g as their first turbo upgrade.

Ive not got it on yet but it is my first turbo to use, i wanted a 20g but thought i would stsrt smaller first and buikd it up to mimic close to a 20g ish and see if i need to go bigger from there on,

16g came on my car when I bought it. Reasonably it's the cheapest and most effective way to gain power (in terms of turbo) from the t25. I have since upgraded to a tdo5h 20g and haven't looked back.

When I bought my first DSM many, many moons ago my first turbocharger upgrade was indeed a Big 16G. Now I've learned there are many more options to benefit many different horsepower/airflow demands at various boost levels with different spool characteristics for each one, so it goes a bit deeper than just following the herd. :D

16G was my first turbo upgrade, When they say that for 99% of DSMers a 16g is all you'll ever need, they're really not lying, there are some of us that prefer 68hta variants, or holsets, or the straight line guys that like the huge turbos.. But for the daily driven street car, a 16g is hard to beat dollar for horsepower, the only thing comparable is a td05 20g/ or a v1 68hta but they're still almost double the price of rebuilt unit from Justin.

Back in the day a 16G was the only reasonably priced turbo option. A 20G could cost you like 900-$1000.....15 years ago. Imagine how expensive that is now.

I fell in love with a Spyder during a car show in Los Angeles, so I purchased a 99 GST Spyder in 2000 with a stock turbo and was going to upgrade to a bigger turbo. Back then every part was so expensive, so I didn't buy any performance parts, except an air filter. Three years ago, I bought a Evo 3 16g to put in the Spyder, but never had the chance because I didn't have the supporting mods. It's still stock until this day. Last year, I've just purchased a 99 GSX; it came with a Big 16g. I love the quick response of the Big 16g. I'm planning to put a BW S259 turbo set-up in the GSX soon and put the Evo 3 16g in the Spyder.

I bought a slightly used E3 16g from a member here 8 yrs ago, had it ported by Sean Glazer from Extreme Motorsport since it was literally only 10 mins away. Still running this little guy in my gsx.

S16g for me for my first swap. Ran a best of 12.4@113 on that little guy maxed out 37lb/min haha. Super fun turbo and I still have it and plan to put on my talon when it's ready. I've even rebuilt that sucker 3-4 times now and it still keeps going strong ;)

My first turbo car was a 1st gen Neon with 2.4L Stratus motor and Hahn S16G kit, didn't perform like a small turbo should (might have been the setup). Ran 12.95 on slicks.

The original turbo on my Evo was a small 16G (Evo 1), but was a bit lacking. Still ran 12.39@110 with 22 psi, untuned. Picked up a 1st gen 68HTA with FP manifold, but my car was on stock motor and the setup was never right so I won't get to max it out. Now going with the sledgehammer option of a twin scroll T4 EFR7670.

I'm a sheep and followed the advice of everyone on these forums by going with a small 16g. I'm glad I did.

The power band is very usable on the street in everyday driving. For me, my car is an absolute blast. Plus, it bolts right on, supporting mods are straight forward, and it's an easy way to keep up with V8s at the drag strip.

Which turbo you go with depends on what your goals and budget are.

My first car came with a 20g but ended up switching to 14b to get it running. But the current one I have now started with A 14b but do plan on going to a 16g once i build my car a bit more and need it to get that extra power.

I technically started with a E316G but it never bolted as a true 16G as I put a 20G compressor on it before installing it. Still counts though... I'm happy with it although I'll probably go HX35 or FP Green in the future.

Since I'm the topic of turbos. Does brand matter if I'm going to a 16g? It seems Manny people stand by garret. Does it make difference?
