so i have a 1999 Mitsubishi eclipse GSX with a 4g63t, im gonna completely rebuild the car. but instead of just building that engine, i was wanting to know if anybody knew of anything better i could swap it with. whats the best engine i could put in it?

That is the best engine you could have in it, but that's all matter of opinion. Some people prefer 6 bolt engines, others prefer 7 bolt engines (which yours has if it's original). Each have pro's and con's, but it all depends on what your goals are for the car.

my goal is to build it better than any other.
the most I've seen anybody get out of this engine is 550hp.
that's why i want to know whats the best engine/trans for a AWD that i could squeeze in it. i know I'll have to do some fabrication.

I've seen way more power than that pushed out of these engines... Engine and transmission are one thing, but if you're going for high HP, you need to beef up the transfer case, rear diff, axles, and drive shaft in addition to the transmission. One wrong move, and you'll blow those components apart.

However, just to build it better than any other isn't much of a goal. Is this going to be a street only car, track only car, or a mix of both? Also, if track car, is it going to be for drag, autocross, time-attack, road-race, etc...? In most of these cases, 500hp is more than enough, hence why most don't worry about anything higher.

Back when I got my first turbo DSM, I had the unrealistic goal of getting around 800hp. While this HP level is obtainable, it's for the most part pointless, and a waste of money due to how the car would be used. Now many years, and a few cars later, my only real goal for power is to have enough to put a factory GTR to shame, but it includes more than just power. So 5-600hp for me wouldn't be a waste like way back when I wanted 800.

Oh yeah i know all of that. just taking it one step at a time.
and to answer your question, both.
i want to do the most i can with this car, and like you said put a GTR to shame/get that 7. 1/4 mile
so what do you say would be the first major step? right now its almost all stock.

First step is always, always, always good maintenance. Make sure everything on your car is in good working condition before you modify anything. You don't want to upgrade something just for something else to break.
