so here is my store for the last 4 days has been hell the first day i was on a road and i was driving and all of a sudden i hit a flooded part of the road and it was night time and i hit the water hard enough the water splashed up and killed the ignition coil and because it killed that it kill my cat to so i had my car towed back and then i fixed it and then i went to leave the next morning and and made it 10miles then car started to over heat so i pulled over and saw my water pump was slowly leaking so i did the stupid part and put radiator seal stuff in and it stopped my leak. i went to leave for the store today and on the way back the timing belt snapped at high rpm which dont make since because the belt was replaced 20k miles ago so what im asking is when do i say forget it and get rid of it? this is driving me crazy. i would like to see what you all say regardless of whats said please.

That is a subjective question and the answer will differ from person to person. It all depends on you, how much you like to wrench, and how much you like the car/dsm. Nobody will be able to give you a definitive answer. And... considering you are asking a question like this on a dsm site... I say keep it and wrench on!!!

i love the car alot just last 4 days have been hell and i dont mind working on it but also parts are hard to find in cali to

Keep it. This is a dsmers life. I've had pretty good luck with mine but it's constantly staying on top of maintaince. But I've still been frustrated as heck before and even contemplated getting rid of it but after a day or two was loving it again. The best advice I can give is get another daily driver, nothing fancy just something you can drive back and forth to work and such. Then breakdowns won't be such a pain and not as stressful knowing you still have transportation. Also you won't have to rush to get it back going. Stick with it buddy:talon::thumb:

You should keep it man. It'll be worth the trouble once you get it fixed. But whatever you do, don't cut corners. That'll just give you more headaches later on. Do things once and do them right. I know your pain, my car hasn't run in 3 months. Keep at it!

Keep it and I second what @blktalon3 said about a daIly. It makes it much easier knowing you can still get around therefore there's not as big of a rush which will allow you to order parts keep up on maintaining it and do it correctly with the right parts. Don't get me wrong, it's rough mentally for sure. Lucy(my car) has been down for over 4 years due to rushed maintenance and piss poor TB from gates. I know I will catch hell for hating on them but it's the facts. I finally got everything I need to do the job right but, life happens (wife, kids, dogs and job have all played a part in it taking so long. It has crossed my mind a few times about getting rid of her and what ALWAYS brought me back was watching dsm race videos, driving around and seeing someone get on there car and think it's hot shit and at the track. Knowing I have less $ invested and will do 3X more damage to there ego when she's finally back. Sorry to go off on a long tangent but just wanted to give you some moral support that you're not alone and don't give up! :dsm::talon::laser: :thumb:

Welcome to DSM ownership: Where only the rich and patient survive...

...Well, rich until the car makes you poor.

That all depends on what you're willing to take on. If the timing belt snapped but you got lucky and didn't bend your valves then it's a fairly easy/cheap repair. Before making a major decision I would see what you're up against. Put a new belt on, get it in time, and do a compression test.

You will have up and downs with the car. asking when enough is enough is different for everyone. I've had my car going on 9 years now and always get sh!t from my brother and friends to scrap it when she's down. It's an old car so I know it requires constant maintenance and repairs but when she's running right it's a blast to drive. This dsm has turned me into a great mechanic for sure. Til death due us part :dsm::rocks::hellyeah:

Lol so update. So I'm 100% sure I bent 12valves out of 16 . I put a belt on and it had no compression so I took the valve cover off and 12 rocker arms where all over the head and I went to put them back on and the valves they go on they wouldn't stay because the cam shaft wouldn't even touch the rocker arm unless the egg shape side was down on it so yeah next step rebuild head.

Going to have to agree with everyone else and recommend sticking with it.

I can definitely empathize with you. Of the 48 months I've owned my AWD 1g, it has been "down"- meaning non-operational for one reason or another -for exactly 24 of those months. If I can make it through November, I can notch another "roadworthy" month and get above the 50% operational mark :p

There have been times I wanted to shove this car in front of a moving train, but I'm glad I didn't. Just get yourself another car that's reliable and boring. That way, when you're driving your boring DD, you'll miss the awesomeness of the DSM and that'll hopefully summon the motivation to fix it. Works for me.

I've played with the same idea. Ive had my 1g for 4 years, its still being unreliable and breaking all the time. Every time I think I'll just part it out and scrap it i think of all the panel replacement I did, sand blasting, under coating, detailing and tons of money I've put into her I just realise I cant let it all be for not. But when she works boy does it make it worth every minute of the hair ripping freak out pissed off bs I went through.
I just rebuilt my first engine and installed a fmic and ecmlink so progress has been made. Even though she's giving me problems again with lean afr's at idle, it'll be worth it. Being a ecmlink noob sucks
