Starter is stuck engaged. Not in the forward position. Spins with no keys in the ignition. As soon as I touch the positive terminal it draws power. Any ideas.

I got a starter off a 95 eclipse for my 1g at the junkyard. bench tested it before I took it home. so i know it works. No its not hooked up wrong. It wont grab the flywheel. it sounds like its hitting the teeth when its turning. is the starter not compatible?? or is there something else up. donor was a 95 gsx manual. mines a 91 tsi manual. both awd. thanks

I had an AWD auto 96 talon, but i had to put a manual starter in... take both starters and compare the length of the nose drives. I found the supposed "correct part" in every parts manual was the wrong one in reality. Weird.

I feel like my bellhousing isn't for a 1g. I think the bell housing from a 2g turbo is swapped onto my trans. (Justs a guess, might be wrong. I know something out of the ordinary is ammis) since the flywheel has a smaller diameter. and the 2g bell housing is bigger to accompany the extra tiny bit of room for them extra 4 teeth on 2g bell housing its not grabbing. 7 bolt has 110, 6bolt has 106. I really think that combined with some trans swap or machining mistake ignored by the previous owner is my issue. Especially since both the bolt holes don't line up for my new starter. (If anyone wants to act like I commited a sin. Yes when I tried to turn my car over my starter only had one bolt in it. Its fine. Dont be mellodramitic. It wasnt going anywhere.) (No I didnt buy the wrong starter) As a matter of fact one i bought specifically for my car today doesnt fit. Which dissapoints me. Because I gave the original to the guy at the junkyard for the first one I got to cover my core charge. Nothing to compare it to now LOL. Thank you to the two of you whom actually tried to help me. I've bought 3 starters this week LOL. I'm talking about 4 starters if anyones curious. Original, junkyard, I swapped out for another one at the yard. bought a brand new one today when that didnt work. Hard to follow sorry.

It's most likely the wrong starter played The Thin piece of metal behind the flywheel between the starter and the bellhousing

Have you swspped something else recently? You are incorrect on the 6 vs 7 bolt teeth count. Its fwd vs awd and its not possible to put a fwd flywheel on an awd. Did you have a bad stsrter and that's all you swapped or did you do a motor or trans swap recently?

You had another thread about starter and battery shorting out etc. What was the resolution. Im not convinced you have a starter problem.

I'm clueless as to stuff that has been done to the car before I had it. I know I've never touched the trans or transfer case or anything other than the motor. My battery had a short in it. I put another battery on and bench tested the new starter it works fine. My only problem is misalignment. I got 2 Off two different 95's and they didn't align or work. I bought a brand new one for my car from AutoZone along with a battery. Starter now works. Doesn't align.

I've rebuilt the stock block, but the flywheel turns when I turn the motor over by hand. Lol

I can't. Really explain part by part all the problems that have led up to me buying another battery. Or why or how it was possible for a battery to short out. It would take me hours, I could write a book. It was my last solution to the issue. Of course as with everything else since I've got the car. Solve one problem run into another. My starter isn't aligned with my flywheel. It's for my car, it spins. And the abbendix kicks out. My motor isn't froze. It's all put together right. There's no wiring issues. Problem one. Bolt holes don't align. Problem two its not grabbing my flywheel. I may just end up drilling new holes and tap and die them.

Stop right there....bolt holes don't align? Elaborate pleaae. There should be a thin plate installed behind your flywheel. Bolt holes ahould all align. If its all possible how about some pics from the backside without starter installed.

Yeah you're right. But even with it out it doesn't grab or line up. Can Anyone give me an explanation as to what it does exactly so I can fab one that'll work. How fat it'll half to be.

Youre talking about a solution when youre not even sure about the problem. We are suggesting alignment problems. Did you check? Can you get a picture? Do you know what trans is in the car?
