Solution
It's straight forward. Drain/drop the transmission pan and locate which solenoid needs to be replaced, unplug and then un bolt it then plug in new one bolt up and put it all back together.

going to try this on my 97/ GS-T... Just ordered both solenoids off rock auto since All of a sudden, it won't shift out of 1st gear: P/R/N/D all work fine except it just won't shift. When I let off gas, it "goes into neutral" as if it doesn't know how to shift into 2nd from 1st... just hit 106k mi, original motor, no mods other than CBE and Injen Intake....

Have you tried manually shifting it, just to see if it might go into the next gear? It is odd that they all went out. Check the 12v source going out of the TCU to the solenoids. In fact, check to see if it is plugged in good. Usually, in limp mode, it only has 3rd so the fact that it has 1st means one solenoid is working.

If FIRST gear is the only gear that will engage then, BOTH solenoids ARE WORKING.
The "A" and "B" solenoids are both on in first, see THIS thread for more info. :thumb:

The worrying thing is that he says it goes into neutral and won’t go back into gear until he switches the gear indicator. If it’s stuck in first and just goes into neutral it could be anything honestly. Definitely weird. For some reason I’m leaning more towards the pump or junk in the VB.

Sprag maybe.

For those who care, the problem for me wasn't the gear solenoids, it was the TCU! I replaced gear solenoids 1 & 2 and problem still persisted. I ordered a used TCU off Ebay and were back to normal shifting and operation!!!
