"Good Ole EVO III 16g days"... Just my thoughts

There's another one floating around that says "I can't wait to build my motor" "stay stock, stay stock as long as you can!" LOL

I think I remember that one haha! I just need a little more pull in the upper rpm range, the evoIII spools so fast it feels like the power "flattens" as the revs go higher.

A small cam (GSC s1 for example), along with a SMIM will extend the range a little. Going to a 68hta or td05h 20g (aka bastard 20g), is your next best bet. Keep in mind the current 68hta will lose approx 500 - 1K RPM spool time (aka boost before 4K RPM will be non existent), and you'll lose that 16g "hit". How much boost are you running currently? Whats it fall to at redline?

Just running 20psi and no real drop off that I've noticed. Cams are definitely on the list along with e85, but I will need to update the clutch before pushing more power. I don't think much more power can be held on the current one and don't feel like forcing it to slip.

Your not even in the fun range yet. Once you feel 28 - 32 psi on e85 with cams your understand what I mean by the 16g "hit". I assume your not not roasting all 4 tires in second gear yet?...

Definitely not, the clutch would be spinning before that would happen.

I don't know if I want to push my 16g that hard. I've been in evos with their stock 9 turbos pushing 30+ psi and it's fun, but it's still not like a big turbo feel.

I have an appointment to get the car Dynoed at STM next Wednesday.. I'm turning the boost back up to about 26 or so and I'll tune as well as I can to keep knock out on a pump gas + 108 fuel mix.

I'm really hoping to just beat my cousins numbers of 336awhp with his WRX from when he had it tuned a few years ago. now he's got a little more boost and cams (if you've never heard a boxer engine with 272s at idle, dear god it's amazing) and he's aiming for 420+whp and when I switch back to the v2 68hta I'll be aiming for similiar numbers. I'm gonna miss the 16g hit but at the higher boost levels I hope the 68hta will make up for it. I'll let you know how I do with the 16g though!

Sweet! Can't wait to see the sheet (post a mod's list as well). My 2g (going on 8 years ago now), made 339whp, it was a fun car (back then). I have a 42r now. I miss the 16g days.. I seriously need to buy another car to 16g! LOL

What were your mods with the 16g and boost level?

EVO 3 16g, Rewired supra pump, Victory FMIC kit and o2 dump (3" open downpipe), HKS VPC, 880cc injectgors, c12, wastegate line pulled, Base timing advanced. ARP head studs (115 lbs ft I think?). There wasn't very much in the way of tuning back in 2007 / 08. Car was dyno'd at Exotic Motorsport in Cochranville, PA (they closed up in 2010 I think?). It was a fun car! There may have been more mod's, I don't remember, I do remember the ungodly heavy ACT 2900 clutch though!

EDIT: I just remember the Sunpro boost gauge went to like 15 psi or something? And it was pointed straight south (25+ psi I would guess?)..

Shoot...I'm still aspiring to that (orig. post) mod list! All I've done so far on my 125XXX mile GST Spyder is to put an exhaust and a boost gauge on it. Of course, I do have a Walbro, 1G BOV, hardware store boost controller, AEM wideband, Injen intake, and front mount intercooler waiting to be installed.

Now yes, it is nearly bone stock...but I put about 10,000 miles on my car this summer driving from St. Louis MO to Yosemite and well, some of the way back (long story) and then to Apalachicola FL and back as well as back and forth to work and to all the Cars and Coffee events!

I'm on my 4th of 5 DSMs since 2003. I've always driven them rather than store them. These cars are too awesome to leave in a garage somewhere under a cover left to collect dust, after being restored. With each DSM I've owned, I've been able to add more to the mod list than the previous car. My current one is by far the one I've done the most to. It's not much compared to a lot of others I've read about, or seen in person, but it's mine. I've put on simple bolt-on parts, and now I have 1 AWD Spyder conversion under my belt (which I can say I'll probably never willingly do again). My car isn't anywhere near what I dream for it to be, and that's ok. My dreams aren't of a track only build, or something that'll sit around un-driven for countless months or years. When I feel it's finally complete, it'll still be a daily driven car, subjected to weather and idiot drivers. There's no point to building a car, and then never driving it, or never letting the world see it. We all love these cars, but we should all enjoy sharing them with the world, and showing all the younger drivers what they've missed out on.

I like how far we've come as far as options and our tuning. The car-community as a whole has drastically changed. The idea of having some insane, high-power car crept into a lot of peoples' heads and they almost thought it was going to be easy. That's part of the reason you don't see many on the road or they're all in a garage. Most likey, parted/rusted-out or in a junkyard. The DSM world is VASTLY different that before. I literally, never see DSMs on the street. It's sad.

I miss the EvoIII 16g days in the sense of where we were at as a community. Many of us older guys warned, also, about the influx of cheap, Chinese parts from eBay flooding the market. Just take a look around. In my opinion, the car-scene is a boarder-line joke. Aside from the few who make it tracks, the street-scene, or whatever, is laughable. All this stance BS, massive GT wings, sticker'd up windshields and people refering to their cars as "racecars" when they're bolt-on cars that have never, nor will, see a track.

The car-world has been water-down and injured badly. Unless you were in it prior, you won't get it. Don't take this as "everything was better in my day", because I am certainly not saying that. We've come a long way in many aspects, but we've really taken marathons backwards in other ways. That's my 0.2 cents.

Well guys.. I just got back from STM.. mind you this is with me not doing any BLT or fixing my known exhaust leaks beforehand, 292whp and 264wtq. I'll post the logs and the graph from the run, this is with them just putting it on the dyno as it sat, I didn't want to play with the settings. Talking to some local subaru guys they said on a "high" reading dyno it should be about 340whp. I'm pretty happy with that for a rough tune.

It can only get better! What's your current mod list? Pump or e85? Boost level?

25psi 93 octane with a bottle of octane boost to calm down the knock i have at spoolup

When I type it out like that it feels like a short list for a lot of money.. LOL Sorry if the dyno sheet is hard to read, I don't have a scanner. The other thing to remember is that STM has a mustang dyno, AND I did it on a 90 degree day.. So results may vary LOL. In any event I'll be swapping turbo's soon and I'll see what the 68hta will do

@GST with PSI I thought might like to see my dyno results

On another note - my torque curve sucks for a 16g. I think it's a combination of my FP2 cams not being degree'd and pre turbo exhaust leaks. Unfortunately I'm too cheap/lazy to fix the cam issue until the engine goes bang. and I'll fix all my exhaust leaks when I swap turbos.

What fuel?

Updated. I could of gone a lot more aggressive with timing/boost but I wanted it to represent the way the car is just driving around. not a dyno queen.

That's a lot of boost on straight pump for that turbo. I didn't see ARP head studs listed, but I assume you have them already. Also, I see your on a 255, but no rewire?

On another note, what's with the EVO 8 MAF, and OMNI 4 bar? No SD?

This is why I shouldn't make lists at night when I'm tired, I leave things out. 255, no rewire. yes ARP studs.
It responds just fine at 26psi (just looked at the log, I'm too busy holding on when I mash the pedal) with minimal knock, but that may be because it's been like 85+ the past few weeks.

I have the whole SD kit, I just don't feel like putting it on, I've harassed some of the guys on here enough with silly questions regarding ECMlink, I don't want to put them through that hell all over again while trying to figure out SD (Thanks again Brett!)

Octane booster?? What a cheater....:)

No cheating.. it's a lot more common then you may think, most people just don't admit to it. I don't have any issues with knock up top, only at about 4500, even then it's only a degree or so but I wanted to keep it in check or the dyno run. I didn't change anything from the last WOT pull I did on straight 93, If you'd like I'll post that so you can see.

No tricks.. no black magic, Just me wondering what the car will do with a 16g before I swap it out.
