so I will be replacing the front cv axles tomorrow and I wanted to know if I'll need a specialty tool or will the basic hand tools do the job?
Also is there any helpful links that you guys can give out that I should probably read before replacing?

Worm clamp for the passenger axle. Slide it up to the thick part by the trans and tighten it. Then use a mini pry bar to pop it out by pressing it against the worm clamp. Otherwise, it's a giant pita to remove the axle. Other than that, basic tools. Air tools/impact makes things easier when removing, but not really necessary.

nice tip kapok! vfaq has a nice quide, I found the hardest part was removing the rusted axle nut. My car would just roll even in gear with emergency brake on had to have my gf press the brakes and it popped right off.

The most useful "specialty tool" is a big/long flathead screwdriver with a square cross section on the rod. ram the screw driver up in between the trans and the axle cup then use a wrench that fits (adjustable) to give a quick powerful twist and they pop out almost every time. It's much easier than wrestling with a crowbar etc...

Also try to avoid pulling the joints apart. Its annoying to fit it all back together. And if you do it really bad, you will have to take the boot off to fix. Avoid that at all costs.

Basically:

1) remove wheel

2) remove axle nut with big socket

3) Remove to bolts for shock>spindle

4)unbolt brake line from shock

5) push down on spindle/brake assembly towards the ground to make room for end of axle to come out of wheel hub

6) use screwdriver to wedge in between trans/axle end. hammer the screwdriver into crevice and it will help pop out axle from transmission.

7) trans oil will spill out of axle hole

Alright thanks guys. Let's see how long it takes me to replace these. I already have my liquid wrench ready to spray on that axle nut LOL

so after taking off everything it turns out they gave me wrong axles. They gave me the fwd version so they didn't fit because of my transfer case. In the process I broke the brake line that sits above the rubber line

Contact George Hamilton on the htowndsm Facebook group. He recently found a 1g at a junkyard but I don't know where. You can get the brake line off that car. Parts stores will always sell you the wrong axles on accident.

I can't even find the name of this part. But I guess better to brake now and not while I was driving or anything. This part snapped quickly so I guess it was barely hanging on
