Hi can you tell me a little bit about your motor and why you went with 7bolt. Is it split thrust block? And how was your experience with boostin on the motor build?thanks

I went with the 7 bolt mostly because that's what i have. I've always run a 7 bolt in this car, and it has never given me an issue. The previous engine was built 5 years ago. That was an early 7-bolt and I beat the hell out of it. I had 2 other early 7-bolt cars, neither had problems. One I still have. The bottom end of the engine that was pulled is still fine. It was a head gasket issue. I just wanted to build a new short block for more boost. :).

The new 7-bolt did come from a later car. Boostin built it, as you can see in the previous photos. No issues with them whatsoever. And it looks beautiful. Almost wish I could keep it as a display piece. Ha! It does take a little bit of time, especially this time of year when all the performance shops are busting at the seems with work. (Sometimes it's parts availability that causes a delay, too). Give yourself a month or two after sending or dropping of a block/head/Ect.

Hope that helps. I know people fear "crank walk", but in all honesty, it was blown out of proportion. Plus, Remeber that anything with a crankshaft can suffer premature wear on the thrust bearing. I've actually seen a 6-bolt walk, and a Chrysler 2.4 out of a pt crusier, for example.

Also remember that you are building a high performance engine. They will require more matainence, and things will eventually fail. That's racing. people tend to forget that when pushing a car past the limits it was engineered for.

I do this as a hobby and for fun, so I don't get bent out of shape when it breaks, or spending way more money on it than the car is worth. Lol!

Thanks for the insight. I am in the middle of deciding what to sent to boostin. I have a pile of 6bolts sitting around and 1 7bolt split thrust block. My main reason wanting to use 7bolt is because of a slew of aftermarket parts available for them from to evo blocks. I would like to use lighter aftermarket evo crank and rods. That could be a good starting point for high rpm motor. yeah crank walk is unicorn subject and i don't have any real experience with it either. I am very likely be going with the 7 blot split thrust route.

Are you still using 6bolt head?

Look what I got in my rock auto box today. :rocks:

I am always impressed with your car and what you continue to accomplish, A bit jealous about drag week but I'll get over it. I have like 3 of those magnets with her car on it! I keep putting them on the lift in my garage.

Very good point.... the evo stuff works with the older 7-bolt stuff. The 6-bolt parts are starting to become hard to come by. I am using the 7-bolt head, too. It's what I started with, so just kept it. It's worked out pretty good so far.

LOL!! It cracks me up to see these magnets all over. :)

Thanks! Yup, speaking of Drag Week, the whole focus of this build is longevity. So I may be "over building" it for the power level it'll be at, but it need to survive. I'm also going to give this flex-fuel thing try. Found out quite a few of the fuel lines were cracked and dry rotted. (They are 21 years old after all...) So got some lines and a 450 pump. Going to see how the flex fuel senor works with ecmlink. So should be interesting.

Yes, I know that it probably would have been easier to drop the engine in as a longblock, but found out the head i had redone a few years back is full of sand, so it needs to be torn back down. Needed the space in the garage, so the shortblock/trans was put back in.

Is that a starion I see in the corner? and how are you liking the fp green? About what rpm were you hitting max boost? I had the new model 68hta and just switched back to an evo3 16g because the lag was killing me (My 92 gsx is my summer daily driver and I grew up on v8s so I'm biased)

I like the green. It is noticeably laggier than the 16g.... shifted everything up about 1000rpm or so. Full boost on the Green XL is like 4800-5100RPM. I'll be curious how a ported head, and higher compression engine effects this turbo's performance. The 16g continues to be me favorite "daily driver" turbo. Nothing really compares to it in terms of quick spool and decent power. Even though some have been in the 10's with a 16g; i refuse to gut the car to a tin can. So I'll trade some spool time to keep the interior. LOL!

What head gasket are you using this time?
Cometic. the one in the photos is just a placeholder to protect the deck surface.

Its an '88 Daytona Turbo. Crazy fast.
Correct! It's a 2.4L swapped GT35R powered Daytona. He's gone 10.5's over 140MPH. #fwdproblems. ;)

I still have a bunch of turbo parts from my rotting 86 TurboZ CS.
I was highly active on T-M.com many many years ago. Same user name.
The 2.4 going in my Talon was originally going in my 91 Shadow.. Then the 86 after the Shadow was sold, but the Daytona is too full of body rot. It currently has a T2 2.2 with an A555. I should pull it and find an Omni to drop it in...

Anyway!

That would be cool to see. I've seen people start those 2.4L swaps in the Talon.. but yet to see one finished. Gotta love those old turbo mopars! Watch out for drag week this year.... JT, Reeves (Omni GLH), and Pat (Dodge Shadow), as well as my Talon, and antoher Turbo-mopar guy all got in. We are taking over! LOL!

Have a video link by chance? A co-worker of mine had a daytona waaaay back in the day, he would probably giggle to see one haulin...
Sure! Here's his run form drag week last fall:

And this one form Mopar Nats... just because it's hilarious to see how much this car picks up on the big end.

Learned how to port this weekend. This is something I've always wanted to learn how to do, so the opportunity presented itself with this cylinder head I planned on using. Upon taking the head out of the bag, discovered it was filled with sand. :/ I had this head rebuilt a few years back, and I won't mention the name of the place, as they have since changed their process and even offered to fix it. I just don't want to deal with the shipping, so going to just have it cleaned up locally. Part of this head was ported, down in the combustion area, and was fitted for +1mm valves. However, the runners were not ported. Since everything was questionable on this head now, figured it was prime time as ever to learn how to do this. I really just wanted to match the ports to the new Magnus intake, as well as smooth out the lip.

And some cleaned up parts:

So now I may look around and see what else could use some porting..

Think it'll be ready for the Shootout this year...Or I guess I should ask, do you plan to go?

Nice port work im working on a head gonna try to do some of that when i get ready for next years upgrades.

Looking forward to seeing it again in a few months mines close to getting done so we'll see.
:) you and me both... I miss the car. Good luck with yours, as well!

The plan is to have it for the shootout. However, I've also learned that sometimes things take a lot longer than expected, so not in a hurry. If it doesn't pan out, I'll be bringing the other Talon.

Thanks! :)

Updates on this never-ending project.

1. Removed the ABS wiring.
2. Modified the hanger to fit the Walbro 450 and adapted it to accept AN style fittings.

Doesn't seem like a lot, but both of these were quite time consuming. Goal is to get all the wiring projects done this week, so I can put the interior back together. It's always a joy pulling the dash. What's left is wiring in the ethanol content sensor, and the clutch-cut wire.

THEN... can move onto the re-assembly process.

Few more updates...
Figuring out how the new harness runs, cylinder head on, etc. Working on dropping the battery, as well as running a smaller battery for clearance with the fuel lines and intercooler piping. This ended up turning into a major project.
