Hey fellas. Hopefully someone can shed some insight to this issue. A few months back my friends noticed my car was barely smoking at an idle. But couldn't see it smoking when driving.

I didn't put to much concern into it. When the time comes it needs fixed, I'll fix it.

About 2 weeks later, my brand new catalytic converter blew up. The insides came apart and were plugging my exhaust. I removed the cat, punched everything out of the inside, and put the cat back on. My car doesn't have a muffler so it's technically "straight piped" now.

About 2 weeks after that I noticed the smoking was getting worse at an idle, and when stopping at a red light I can see the smoke when I look out my window. It smells like really bad exhaust leak and is almost transparent. It's not dark enough to tell what color it really is but doesn't smell like oil.

I compression checked all cylinders. They all came up 210psi. Plugs look great, no signs of oil. I replaced my plugs and wires and still smoking. Don't notice antifreeze loss or oil loss, or fuel consumption from too much gas. The car runs great. No check engine light. I've cleaned my intake and throttle body, still no help.

Anyone got any ideas?

Edit: it is a 420A w/ 5 speed.

The PCV valve is working fine. I cleaned it and checked it and it's working as it should.

If I have no signs of oil/antifreeze loss, good compression, no oiled plugs or corrosion, then wouldn't that play out any possibilities of it being anything other than just a rich condition, or maybe somethings in the exhaust pipe burning?

Possible exhaust leak. Since you have no cat or muffler, it wouldnt be easy to hear an exhaust leak over the sound of an exhaust with no muffler.
Where is the smoke coming from? Front of the car? Out the tail pipe? Under the car? Since you said it happens at idle, fire it up and walk around the car looking for where it is coming from.

Smoke is coming out of the tailpipe and no where else. However, I can smell "exhaust leak" inside the car while idling sometimes, or while driving and I let off the fuel. But it's only sometimes.

The car does not smoke at start up at all. It only smokes when it wants to which is what has me so messed up. It's random, there's no pattern here.

I know the smell of burning oil and antifreeze burning (never buy a BMW), and it definitely is not either of these things. It's the same smell as an exhaust leak, but it's incredibly strong and coming out the tail.

Also, my downpipe, flex pipe and cat, are all brand new. And my O2 sensors are both brand new. (The cat as stated though blew up inside. I punched everything out of the inside and put it back on), I also put new gaskets on when I did the exhaust job.

Thanks for the replies guys, keep them coming!

Is there any carbon build up on your bumper where the exhaust ends? It is possible that it's carbon being burnt since your "cat" technical isn't acting like a "cat". The honey combs in the cat are to help the O2 get a reading to adjust fuel trim. If they are removed the the O2 doesn't get the best measurement, so the ecu doesn't compensate for it. I've seen this a lot with domestic V8's.

No, no carbon build up by the tip.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but i thought the first O2 sensor is what the computer reads to adjust fuel/air mixture? The second O2 is there only to make sure the Cat is working properly?

Yes I have a check engine light and the only code is for sensor 2.

So wouldn't the car be trying to lean itself since it's showing a high volume of exhaust? (Since the cat isn't working)

"I compression checked all cylinders. They all came up 210psi. Plugs look great, no signs of oil. I replaced my plugs and wires and still smoking. Well, according to this the light ISNT ON.
So, now that we have established that it is on now. No, it's the opposite. High volume less ppm in a give area because it's moving so fast past the sensor it's telling the ecu it needs more fuel. I've never seen an engine smoke and smell like exhaust when it's was running lean.

I said that in the context that I didn't have a relevant engine light because I've Always been told the second O2 has absolutely nothing to do with whether the car runs rich/lean etc.

Nothing has been changed. Just me trying to not explain every detail that doesn't need to be explained about the car, LOL.

So what is the issue exactly? Having no cat is making the car run rich and smoke?

Weather you think every little detail doesn't matter or does, isn't a good way to get proper diagnosis. I've been a mechanic for over 16 years and it is very important to get as much information as possible to help duplicate and in some cases diagnose it. That's why we have diagnostic flow charts. You wouldn't withhold certain info from a doctor for an issue you need to be treated for then having an allergic reaction and doctors wonder why when you marked No on "are you allergic to anything". Just saying every little bit helps speed the diagnostic process up and get it fixed right the first time.

I have a scanner. I will do a running diagnostic test on it and let you know the results.

Here's hoping this finds out the issue.

How can it be valve seals when I have no oil loss? Nor do I have blue smoke or the smell of oil burning?

Alright the code popping up is P0140

No activitity detected on bank 1, sensor 2.

Here's my live data:
Calc load(%)..... 4.3
ECT......... 197
STFT B1(%)........0
LTFT B1(%)........-0.7
MAP(inHg).......10.9
Eng RPM..... 833
Spark Adv....... 7 degrees
O2S B1 S1(V)........ 0.745 (average)
STFT B1 S1(%).......-1.5
O2S B1 S2(V)........0.470
STFT B1 S2(%).........NA

Edit: O2S B1 S2 doesn't change. The Volts stay the same.
