Have you tested fitment with an evo tranny? If you cut and replace the mounting tabs on the frame for fitment of a 3g trans, the evo one may be different and potentially in the stock 420a tranny location as I have heard. Which would require you to then modify again if you ever go AWD, which isnt that big of a deal honestly, just food for thought.

Good point. Going AWD with this swap is actually very possible with Evo drivetrain components. Some 3g guys have done it. As far as right now i want to get the car back on its feet and see how well it runs. Once I foresee an opportunity to go AWD, I wont hesitate to do it!

UPDATE: Drove over to ClutchMasters to change flywheels and they quickly made the exchange. Finally attached everything back on the 4g63 with no issues.

We were ready to attach the 3g trans onto the Evo motor but first decided to remove the 420a transmission mount location to accomodate to the 3g trans location.

We attached the 3g transmission and started dropping the motor inside the bay! The Dsm is now officially Evo Swapped!! The rear and passenger 420a mount fit with no issues once we dropped the motor in.

Now that the motor is in i had to start putting everything back together, i immediately ran into fitment issues with the Evo 8/9 radiator and Evo turbo hitting the 3g starter. The radiator will need modification to mount correctly, so im considering test fitting a turbo 2g radiator to see if it fits.

The 3g guys that have done this swap, tend to run a 1/2" spacer and having it milled at a certain angle to clear the starter, but in order to run this spacer, you will also need 2g extended studs for proper installation.

I decided to call it a day and took a couple of pictures on how it is currently sat! It has come a long way and Im hoping to have it done before Mitsubishi Owner's day on July 9th 2016 this year!

Keep on going, one little piece at a time and things seem to move along ...... A half radiator and custom manifold to move the turbo out the couple inches you need to clear the starter .... just a thought off the top of my head.

good sh!t
You can also switch to a 2G T3 flange manifold and turbo & still be able to clear the starter. But that depends on the size of the compressor and type of manifold.

Thanks man :hellyeah: The swap overall is very overwhelming, but i have been researching and collecting parts for around a year now. Ill look into the half rads, that seems like a reasonable alternative.

Ill also look into that. I did not know Evos could run 2g manifolds. :aha:

For the radiator, have you thought about trying something like Gofer has done? Seen here on page 5, towards the bottom

Thanks for the link! I might have to run this setup due to having to run a manifold spacer to clear the starter. If the 02 housing hits, this will be my only option.

So far my options are an aluminum 420a radiator (same placement as Evo motor and fits the Dsm chasis), Gst/Gsx aluminum radiator and hope the hoses align,an Evo 8/9 half size radiator, Honda Civic half size radiator, or making the Evo 8/9 Mishimoto Radiator fit with some fabrication.

Ill be test fitting some of the options with a couple of friend's Dsms and Evos and update the thread.

Nice i hope to see at mod day what are your wheels specs thanks

We mocked up the 3G transmission first to get an idea on how it would sit and we noticed that we actually needed to modify the mount and move it forward by around 6" for it to align properly. The front and rear 420a mounts seem to fit thus far. The battery will also need to be relocated.View attachment 299449

How close is the shifter linkages to the mount? Maybe an adapter in the future will make this swap more desirable.

Theres enough room for everything to work properly. You're right, some kind of adapter would be great. Ive seen people with these swaps overseas make some nice looking mounts for their 2g, but i don't see people Evo swapping their Dsms in the future, so everyone will have to make theirs work as they see fit.

Update:

I ended up selling my Evo 8/9 Mishimoto radiator because i did not want to go through the hassle of modyfying the car even more, when i had other options. I test fit my old stock 420a radiator and although it fits, the coolant hoses wont line up. Most likely going to go with a half rad.

I also contacted Road Race Engineering to see if they would take the car in for wiring purposes and they told me they have never dealt with this kind of swap before and it would require lots of hours of labor.

Hoping to get more done by the end of this week. :thumb:

What wiring you looking to get done? Engine harness I assume.

View attachment 299134 View attachment 299139 View attachment 299140View attachment 299145 Hey guys. I've had my Dsm since early 2012, but never really posted on this forum. Since then, I have slowly been progressing on the car overall. It originally started as a 99 N/T OZ Rally Special Edition and is now in the process of an Evo 8 motor swap.

Car is currently on Coilovers with Rays Gramlight wheels, Brembo brakes, aesthetic add ons and some miscellaneous parts here and there. I sadly lost the pictures to when i originally started the motor swap, but I will continuously update this build thread with info on this specific swap, since there seems to be almost nothing available for us 2g guys.
Wow man I applaud your effort this will be very interesting!

Yes, engine harness. Ill be using an Evo 8 harness and ecu. Going to try and have everything tucked for a clean look.
The ecu, yes. The Evo harness will made things a bit harder. Any GST, GSX, or Spyder harness will do and follow the swap an Evo ecu in a 2G thread. The only issue I can foresee right now is the 420a tach working for the 4g63.

Good points, Ill look into that. As far as the tach I've heard i need to run an Evo tachometer to replace the 2g one :hmm: I am going to try and stay away from that, but if it becomes a necessity, ill swap them. I don't think it will look aesthetically pleasing though. :notgood:
