Correct. You can run Evo wheels with either 2ga or 2gb knuckles as they are skinny enough. If you step up to a 255 tire on a 9" wheel with a "normal" offset (something that doesn't really stick out), you'll need that extra inner clearance of the 2gb knuckle.

I run 255s on a 9.5" wheel with 2ga knuckles ;) But it's close, so yes, 2gb knuckles are recommended. I will be making the swap when I go wider

Good info. Im awd swapping my 97. Using a 95 donor. I may just replace the knuckles while im ballz deep in it. Just for future needs. Thanks to all for clarifying

I run 235/45/18's on my 2ga on a Racing hart cp35 wheel, Had to grind a couple thousandths off my rear knuckles to keep from scrubbing!

Must have a high offset (+42ish or so).

I found a full set of 97 eclipse awd knuckles with 100,000. I was wondering what they are worth.

Whatever the seller is willing to sell and you're paying. When I bought my rears I think I paid $15-$20 a knuckle.

See, that's all important info :) You can't just go around saying "255's on a 9.5" wide wheel work without any issues!" when your tire section width was very small or you were running a spacer, hence making your offset even lower.

Geez, getting all technical on me LOL... looks like section width for each tire is 10" and 10.2" so not a big difference in width anyhow, but that would account for the small spacer that I ran before. Regardless, I would hardly say that +32 would be too aggressive ;)

I have a matched pair of 2Gb AWD front spindles from my original owner car. I also have a pair of 2Ga mismatched AWD spindles. Among them I count at different 2G front spindles. I do not know what either 2Ga spindle is although both accept the same bearing hub and axle as the 2G AWD so presumably they're not FWD spindles.

Spindles are marked with either AL, AR, BL, or BR cast into the outside upright. 2Gb are cast BL and BR, which means 2Ga are probably AL and AR.

Differences include at least:

  • Top A-arm offset (affecting tire clearance)
  • Camber, or hub angle
  • Thickness (height) of lower ball joint lands
  • Thickness of material in the bend around the ball joint lands and the bearing hub land and bolt holes
  • Height of tie rod end lands, and
  • Other minor casting differences

Front 2Gb AWD spindles have thicker lower ball joint lands, hub lands, and allow more tire clearance. They will align camber differently than 2Ga spindles too.

If you get them mixed up you'll have camber misalignment, possible alignment changes due to tie rod end locations, and possible interference between lower ball joint studs and axle dust boots.

The two A versions I have clearly don't match - meaning some A's had more tire clearance like the B's - but neither of them match the matched pair of B's, which are original equipment.

I know this is a really old post, but today i went to a salvage yard specializing in DSM's looking for the 2Gb Rear Knuckles. Had a problem where they stripped all the GSX's rear subframes off the bat, so all of their rear knuckles where unlabeled by year. I searched for something to tell me the difference between the 2Ga and the 2Gb rear knuckles, but found nothing. After staring at them for a while and taking measurements, I did manage to find one inside a Dec 96' (effectively 1997) and when i sat it beside the rest I saw this.

I believe this is the 2Ga

And this should be the 2Gb

You will notice the slightest bend in the upper section of the knuckle. VERY hard to catch unless you have the two side by side. Look for the slight outward bend on the inner edge (with the lugs down - putting the inner side facing up). The 2Ga is pretty much straight.
