98 Talon Tsi 5speed FWD. Bought the car a long time ago, owner never did anything with the clutch he said. It was perfect when I bought it but over the past year or so it's getting worse.

So first gear will sometimes pop out of gear, and sometimes it's hard to get into reverse or it will grind. Poping it into first, helps get it into reverse. Is this just an old clutch? Or should I be prepared to have my syncros or entire transmission replaced? I'm thinking it's just a clutch but rather be sure. I just hit 140K on it before I put it away to work on.
I was aggressive with it a few times. I have fun with my car and by no means drive it sensibly. I'm a noob with working with manual trans, so sorry if it's a dumb question.

Old/worn synchros, my awd is the same save popping out of gear. They put organic material on the early synchros for grip, and with certain fluids it doesn't grip till warmed up.

If yours is popping not it's worn synchros or hub gear teeth probably

Popping out of gear is trans related, get on the highway put in 4th and floor it, if it holds and doesn't slip clutch is fine condition wise

Yeah it only went out in 1st, no other gear did that. But it also needed to warm up as well. If it was cold and I went into first it would pop out like crazy. So what's my cheapest way out of this? New tranny or just synchros?

If I need a new tranny I might just pick up an AWD trany and try to do a upgrade. I'll have to talk to my uncle on how he feels about helping me with it though.

It wont be just synchros. Popping out requires further investigation. Possible bad bearings, forks, keys, springs etc.

If first pop out is only prob id ride it out while throwing together a nice replacement

Thanks for the heads up! I'll just get a new tranny and clutch. Bolt on my front lower control arm is stuck in the bushing so everything is really going against my coil over install right now. Backs went in just fine, but the font of the car is so rusty and old that the brake rotor wont even budge loose. Not even with a hammer. So I'm going to be spending a lot more time and money on this car once I get a better paying job. I can't wait to tear it all apart and put new parts on it! I just know the drive after will be worth it!

If ur relpacing the rotor you can take the caliper off but leave the bracket and put a longer bolt and thread into the bracket till it hits your rotor and that way the rotor pop out easy
