I have a 98 gsx and my car won't engage in 3rd gear while driven, but when parked it will, but you can push the while in 3rd gear gear parked.does anyone know what's up with it?

Okay I'll check around and see where I can get some one parts from. Yeah but I like to learn new things, so I'd figure I try it my self. I found a write up about refreshing a transmission from dre. So I'll use that for a refrence.

If you take the trans apart you may need to replace the intermediate shaft bearings and shim accordingly. The intermediate bearings seem to be a high stress area in the awd transmissions.

Keltalon had a link to I believe cobra transmission, they had a rebuild kit with bearings and synchronizers. I thought they were oem parts but I could be wrong. I would make sure before buying as I agree with Paul on only using OEM parts.

Twicks69 is Tim Z of TMZ performance and he rebuilds transmission. He is very active on this forum, is a transmission guru and sells trans parts at great prices. Really good resource to the community and a great guy to deal with. I order all my transmission stuff from Tim to support the dsm community and because when I had transmission questions he answered my private messages. TRE is also a reputable dsm/evo transmission shop and they also sell parts. Jack's used to rebuild but now only offer a limited service for dsm's, they may still sell parts.

I mean mines a fwd but I'll call/message them today.and yeah that's what I've been reading that it's best to shim the transmission when you completely rebuild it. But yeah I'll hit them up and see what they have and everything. I just like to learn things about these cars and it down right now because of a headgasket and a wire tuck. Plus I like to stay cost effective. Lol

Not best to...it's required if you replace bearings. If the shims aren't correct you have play in the taper bearings.

I dove in when I had to. You will need lock ring pliers. 36mm socket. Pin punches and possibly a set of jaw pullers and bearing separator to get it all apart. Lock ring might not be required on fwd. Can't remember.
Sometimes the fifth intermediate gear doesn't want to cooperate and you have to pull it off. Do not pry on it. You can attach a bearing separator to the top of it and then use a two jaw puller on that to get it off. It may just slide off. Hit or miss.
