A picture speaks a 1,000 words

How the car currently sits today.

This car was purchased in January 2014 from being sold on dsmtuners. My friends and I drove from St. Louis to Orlando to pic up the car and then back to StL with no stops for sleeping.

Not exciting to anyone else but I think I'll be glad I have these pics down the road

I picked the car up the day after my birthday and the guy we got it from had a red bow on it for me when we pulled up at 7:30am.

A few mins in Daytona to enjoy the weather.

Only to return to St. Louis with about 6" of snow on the ground. Pulled it off the trailer and into the garage to defrost.

The car had a mild built engine with shepherd stage 4 and a fp3065. I couldn't have been more happy even though it didn't seem quite right. We spent a ton of time boost leak testing and replacing gaskets and seals. Short time later came ecmtuning v3 with a map sensor, a cheap catch can and a FIC fuel rail.

And we became "tuners" LOL, not really but we were having a blast learning how to work with the software and we were really getting the car smooth at about 20-21psi on pump gas with the 950cc injectors.

I had some fun with awd launches.
One of my coworkers getting a surprise.

Then it happened!

I was racing a buddy in his 2010 ctsv and went to 2nd instead of 4th. Resulting in a nasty overrev that tapped a couple valves and I suspect was the cause of the toasted oil pump.

That was April 2014

My mindset at this point was to pull it apart fix only what needed to be fixed and then get it back together so we could get on with 1850cc injectors, e85 and 36lbs of boost. Oh yeah!

Well, words of advice, if you reside in or around St. Louis MO and have a 4cyl find a machine shop that specializes in your build. It will save you a ton of headaches and $$$$. The first machine shop sent back the head ready for assembly spray painted, belt sanded and full of some sort of media. And this guy was "the best around" according to every v8 guy I talked to.

Long story short, through a random chance we got set up with a tuner in Kansas City who set me up with the owner of KC Engines who had experience with 4g63's and complete confidence that he could do what we wanted. He turned out to be far more thorough than I could have ever wished. Many of the parts I brought to the table he rejected. I decided that if I was going to go through all of this time and expense I will BE SMART about it and try to plan ahead for the worst.

The oil system, bearings and a wide powerband was the focus for the new engine.

A plan and the parts started coming together.

SHORTBLOCK

- used factory bore 6 bolt block

- Kiggly main girdle

- ARP main studs

- factory polished crankshaft

- ACL main bearings

- Wiseco HD 10.5:1 22mm wrist pin pistons.

- FFWD Connection Vader series aluminum rods with 22mm wrist pin (Darren at FFWD is amazing, I could not tell you how much he went out of his way for us. Truly a pleasure to do business with)

- FFWD coated rod bearings

- STM balance shaft delete kit and full gasket kit with MLS head gasket.

- new front case and oil pump

- 90' air cooled oil filter housing and MAP oil cooler kit

HEAD

- original port work that was done durring the previous build

- GSC S2 camshafts

- HKS cam gears

- Manley valves

- Kiggly Behive valve springs and retainers

- Ferrea valve guides and seals

- Kiggly head oil pressure regulator

- 3g revised lifters

- ARP head studs

And I just got that back finally! Yesterday actually LOL

Meanwhile through the different machine shops and build process I got to work with some other stuff.

Durring the tear down we did find a small amount of metal in the oil and decided to send the FP3065 back to Forced Performance to have the center section rebuilt.

Picked up some FIC 2150cc injectors

Innovate LC2 wideband (replacing aem)

A big 16g from CXRacing to install for breaking the motor in.

Another great guy I was able to talk with is Tim Z. from TMZ Performance. He is incredibly experienced, knowledgeable and very helpful with deciding what will work best for my goals and planned abuse. He directed me towards the
South Bend SS-X clutch with a segmented ceramic clutch disk and CC chromoly flywheel.

Stepped up to a 45psi sweep Prosport boost gauge

Also a Prosport electric oil pressure gauge.

I then took the opportunity to remove the old rattle can paint from the engine bay that had finger prints and wrinkles in the paint. It was a mess.

Not having a booth available nor a compressor large enough to spray paint with a gun. I discovered Eastwoods 2 part catalyzed rattle can paint.

We used all Eastwood 2 part rattle cans. Epoxy and filler primer, knocked it down and then used the gloss black then the clear. For the lower half of the firewall, core support, crossmember and many of the bolt on parts were painted with the Eastwood underhood and chassis paints.

And then I put way too much work in to wet sanding and polishing the cleared areas LOL.

BTW this paint is tough! And great against chemicals.

How many cans of the 2k did you end up using for the engine bay? I just learned about that paint and was thinking about using the same on mine.

Looking good bro, solid build you have here. Funny it came from Orlando its usually the other way around!

Shoot I wish I would have kept track better. I would say if you are doing everything plan on 1-1.5 cans per coat. It really depends on how perfect you want it. We put down a lot of paint so we could sand it out. It really is an excellent product, I've been truly impressed. Good Luck!

Thanks man, I am really trying to keep my current momentum going and get this thing running by the end of the month.
I was in the same boat last month, keep it up stay active and it will get done in no time! Just took mine for the first test run a few days ago. What a great feeling when you see it all come together!

The last of the stuff I was waiting on

Hopefully will have the clutch/flywheel installed, transmission bolted on and reinstall the power steering lines and pump back in the engine bay.

Good job man! Do you plan on doing any tucking with the power steering lines? Or are you just running them in the stock location?

Screw PS LOL changed my mind and pulled it all out at right before I went to bed(pic was taken about 5 mins before that)
Planning to get it all running and work out some of the kinks and then convert it to a manual rack.
