First off, I have searched through this site trying to find some basic information on wheel fitment. I found some nice colored tables that do not factor in wheel width, and I also found some merged threads with thousands of morons asking if 20s will fit on their Eclipse.

So simple question. Will 18x8 +40 wheel work ok without rubbing? A simple yes or no will do. I am at stock ride height.

Given the measurements you are asking they should fit. I have a factory set of rims I am running from a 2010 lancer and they are 18x7 +46. I am lowered about 1.5 right now with no rubbing and still can bring my wheels out about another inch to inch and a half to flush with the fender. Hope that will help you out like I said cant be positive since this is my first pair of 18s on the car. Not a big fan of the size just waiting for my xxr 527 to get here

You are only giving us half the equation, you need to provide the tire size. A 215/40/18 should fit, but a 245/40/18 probably won't. You still may need a thin spacer depending on how close to the knuckles you are.

^^^ It's actually about a third of the equation, providing a tire size isn't really enough either since section width and rolling diameter changes from tire to tire too.

Stock AWD 17's run a 215/50 which gives it an approximate diameter of 25.5" and a wheel gap of 3" (looks like 3').

Try to find a tire with a rolling diameter close to stock, which is 25.5", so your speedo gauge isn't 10mph off going down the freeway. On an 18" wheel that's around a 40mm sidewall tire but you'll have to look at each tires specific specs since they change even if they're labeled as a 40mm sidewall.

Section width you'll want to ballpark 9"-9.25", which is roughly a 225-235mm wide tire depending on their manufacturing specs. I'm not telling you to grab a 235 though, don't let that 225 or 235 label mislead you. Actually get into the tires specs and look at the section width and make sure it's 9"-9.25" (235mm) because some tires labeled 235's, like some Yokohama's run in the in 245mm wide range even with a 235 printed on them.
If you do your homework and dig into tire specs, shopping for the sizes you need, you should have no problem with rubbing especially on the stock suspension. Even then, I'd bet you could even drop it an 1" and still be in the goldilocks zone.

I can give you a maximum figure that I personally run, so anything under *should* fit (again dependent on your tire size).

17x8.5J +46 offset wheel fits without issue, so an 18 inch wheel with the same specs should bring it up by just a bit but still be in the safe zone. The tires I've put are 225/45/17 , but they are less than a centimeter away from the knuckle, so a wider tire will most probably rub on that setup.

So I think your wheel choice will definitely fit without issue, so long as you don't try to put ridiculously wide tires.
