Reading through made me think of the topic of inventory! One of the better yards here started doing online inventory. You know year, make, model, and sometimes a picture. No specifics though like engine, drivetrain, transmission, or options. It does help though if you're scouting for like interior or exterior pieces that might not be specific to a turbo model. Word of mouth is great, too. That's how I found out about the awd model that I snagged the rear end off of. Lol.

I always Carry everything I cam think of when going to the u pulls I never leave without some for my dsm.

The way my junkyard (and a lot of other junkyards around the country) works is we use a tablet to "inventory" vehicles.. we pay for a program that once we enter the VIN it will decode the engine, transmission, axle ratios, and then we walk around the car and enter each part individually, We do not bother with most interior pieces, speedometer, radio, and column are about the only things we really care about inside the car. It's getting to be commonplace to inventory online, just like facebook and twitter help you connect with people across the country the program we use connects us with hundreds of other yards, it's not uncommon to get phone calls for an engine or transmission from a shop out of state and for us to freight ship it out.

3g eclipse [or same year as 3g eclipse Galant] brake boosters [and the master cylinder that comes with them] are a nice upgrade when running any larger then stock brake upgrades for both 1g and 2g dsm's, also the later 2g style black ISC, can be had off of some later gen mitsu mirages.

I wish I would of known that when I did my clutch pedal assembly, all that was already off and out of the way! Ah well theres always next time

This might be a good excuse to get a stainless clutch master to slave line installed... LOL

Unless of course you already have one installed? a stainless line will be a lot easier to work around, being that you could take advantage of the semi-flexible line after removing it from the car, and move it aside and install the 3g brake booster and brake master slave cylinder, without spilling much [if any] clutch fluid in the process.

I looked into it but settled on getting the one that connects from the slave to that first fitting by the trans, everything is hardlined. As many times as I have had to pull my clutch master out of the way I SHOULD of done the braided setup.. (Broken clutch pedal assembly, went in and out THREE times before I found a good solution (guy that welds tube chassis for race cars solved all clutch pedal issues, been over a year now)

The only good thing about that is now I can get the clutch pedal assembly out in about an hour if I hustle. That and I had to keep pulling the master to fix the whole clutch adjustment length issue. If your using a 2g and your still way too short (which means you had it welded in the wrong position) a 01-05 sonata 5spd or lancer provides an even longer rod then a 2g.

I've loaned tools in the yard before but I never loan someone a tool that I really care about.... like my good ratchet or a good socket i use all the time..... In general I won't loan anything to anyone I don't know because as I stated above, "we're not buddies just because you're in the yard I am." It's like showing up to the store and when you're in the isle asking if you can put some of your items in their cart because you forgot to get one. You knew you were shopping, you SHOULD have known what tools were involved with removing the part you need, and like anything else in life plan ahead and come prepared.

You want another one of my tips that I think will help a lot of people? I use a small canvas hand bag that I can carry in one hand. It holds every tool I need to nearly take any part of any dsm apart (and really anything else that is metric in the yard). It doesn't weigh a lot, it doesn't slide around in the back of my car like a tool box does, and it's nice and small. So my tip is, find a good small canvas hand bag and carefully select your tools. I'll try to get a picture of what I take into the yard and share it with you all.

19gsx91 - I do agree with you that people shouldn't be ransacking parts and throwing them all around. There's a difference between getting you job handled quickly and being rude to the workers that will have to come clean up the hazard you created.

Another good tip is, if you find a part you like and don't want/need to buy right then..... take it far away to another brand of cars and put it in some other car. The person that ends up at the car won't know what vehicle the part goes to, so they won't mess with it.... and the people that would know what vehicle it goes to won't ever look in some random car across the yard for that eprom ecu you stashed.

Here's another good one. Please please please please please..... do not take cam caps off of heads. I cannot tell you how many times I've found an otherwise good dsm head that had it's cam caps removed. It just makes me think so you ruined the head you tried to fix by installing those caps on it and you ruined the head that you removed them from. Sure you can probably align hone the cam towers or whatever but that's like.... domestic car machine shop bs that no DSM should ever deal with. If you're having to align hone a head to get it back into spec you should just align that cylinder head to be parallel with the inner walls of your trash bin..... or you can do like me and melt it down into ingots to use for other fun things.

Definitely would love to have a list of stuff I can pull from other cars that I can use! I just usually glance at Dodge and Chrysler before I leave just to see if I can snag anything.

Tools! I normally don't like lending out my tools to strangers, but, I know the feeling of showing up and realizing you are not prepped for what you need to do. If I do lend a tool to a stranger, better believe I'm less than four feet away and both eyes are you. I normally only carry a canvas bag with the most basic stiff, wrenches, screw drivers and socket and ratchet set. Unless I know I'm going for something more specific, I'll check to see what I need to get it with before I leave and make sure I have it. I always have my phone on me. I count that as a vital tool. To look up part numbers, verify what I'm looking at. Make sure I'm actually grabbing what I need. Order a pizza on my way home. Lol.

Courtesy is big thing in my book at salvage yards. Yes, I know the car is junk. Just because it's junk doesn't mean you should trash the rest of whats good on the car. I can't say how many times I've gone to yard, looking for one piece and find it completely ruined for no reason at all. It's really irritating. And please, while some one else is working on the car, don't go slamming doors and hoods on that car. It's kinda scary already under neath the hood of a car in a salvage yard, I don't need someone slamming a door and that hood for what ever reason, decide to come down on me. My last thing for courtesy is, taking parts to make money off them. And I don't mean two or three, I mean all of them. I went to the yard for a tps sensor, they were all gone. All of them. Off all the mitsu's and dodge's. Just the tps's. And then when I griped about in a local group, the guy who took them all, offered to sell me one for double what I would have payed at the yard for.

This is mainly west coast time stuff I deal with. Out in Nashville, every one in that had a dsm/mitsu was courteous about salvage yards. We shared when new cars arrived. We helped each other. It wasn't an uncommon sight to see a small group of us helping each other out to rip the stuff we wanted. It was always awesome, and I always walked away with the stuff I needed. Here, it feels like I'm fighting an army for what I want. It's kinda why, if I need it, I'd rather just order it from Miller Import's if I know I can't get it new.

Why fight at the yard, when I can just chill at home and have it delivered to my front door?

I'm noticing a trend with the people that respond and the region that they're from, not a lot of people on the east coast seem to have nearly as much of an issue with other people at junkyards compared to people the midwest/west coast. Maybe it really is that bad out there? Can't speak from experience.

There are people who come to my yard and some other ones in the area and pull specific parts for their ebay stores, one of them works for our company and he can walk out with whatever he wants.. Hands down some of the hardest people to work with (in my case) and deal with because they seem to have some sense of entitlement to whatever they find.

It seems like the topic has been all but covered...
I will add that courtesy goes a long way; can you borrow one of my tools? Hell no. I get asked all the time and 80% of the time I will offer to go help them get the part off. Some people are so grateful they offer a few bucks but I always tell them that it's on the house. We never have turbo 63 stuff at my yards so I am there for little things anyway, so what's an extra 5 minutes out of my day. Plus lets face it most of us dsmr's can wrench better than 90% of the average population. So if 5 min can save a person the hassle of driving home to get a tool just to have to come all the way back... why not put some good karma out there.

I just found this post and it's nice to see. I too leave a parts car in neat order once I take what I want for the next person. Seen too many just torn apart without regard to whomever else may need that random bolt or sensor. I even take a picture of the cars I take parts from (that I actually use on my car) just for a memory of why my car gets to continue rolling. It actually sadens me to see them rot away and stripped, just to be crushed one day.

Lol I'm acually the same way hah I have a bunch of pictures of talons I've used for parts

I put a box over the sunroof (was removed) on a 92 talon so the mint seats wouldn't get ruined , I've closed a lot of doors and hatches

And I remove stuff the right way not the easy way
