fun and easy cars to work on. I'm from ozark missouri, but moved out of state so i can't really help much. but you'll get the hang of these cars pretty quick. i rebuilt most of my 97 gst with no help or knowledge on the car. atleast with mine, i know every nut and bolt in this car and a few tricks to get other things to work. they are simple cars to. its only as complicated as you want to make it be. take time to understand it then you'll know it inside and out like me and many others do. nore parts are available for the 420a enignes than it is the 4g engines for these cars so you'll have no issues with finding parts.

Cool thanks for your reply I am learning mechanics and brake work I had the engine replaced on this after it sitting for a year cause timing was thrown off. I'm trying to restore everything on it the best I can put aftermarket headers on it hooked everything up in the engine and its running but blowing white smoke and now the inside windows fog up and there is steam coming out my dash in my vents. So I guess that's a heater core problem which looks like a pain to do from what I've read. I just did my front brakes my calipers and my rotors I'm getting ready to do my rear struts and my rear brake drums and shoes then ordering a new exhaust and cat back system. It is a lot of fun I just want to get it running good again right now then I will start the body work. I built a 99 GS years ago it was a custom show winner but I did the bodywork and paint and all the customs not the mechanic work

if you're getting white smoke and if it has a sweet like smell then its a coolant problem. the dash is a pain but its not bad. i've had mine out atleast 8 times. just around 15 or so 10mm bolts and 11 screws. most of the screws is in the center console.. gauge cluster has to be pulled out for the 2 bolts behind that.

Do I have to pull the dash out to get to the heater core? I went out and started my car the exhaust smells bad and its blowing white smoke the heater is coming on and blowing warm I don't think it ever gets hot but it didn't fall out the window and mediately and it hasnt had steam out the vents yet

Fog up the widow

what does the exhaust smell like? to change the heater core you will have to pull the dash out. its pretty much taking everything out of the car in that one spot. i haven't found the easy way for that yet. stripped my ac unit out and filled the holes and rebuilt the heater core box re insulating it. i pulled everything out except the wire harness. i have been able to pull the heater core out without pulling gas petal out so that can stay in

Okay I've got everything off the dash for the dash to be pulled out I mean its loose and everything what do I need to do next and where is the heater core I'm looking at my Chiltons manual trying to figure this out. I pulled my dash out of my Ford zx2 once the Eclipse was so much easier.

My dash..whats next?

Ok then what do I do about the air bag

take it out or leave it in. just make sure the plug is out. if you want to take it out its only like 2 10mm bolts and 3 screws

Ok..the plug? On the left of it? Thanks for yr help

itll be a red plug behind the radio with the yellow wire loom. taking it out will make it about 5 pounds lighter

Is it this red connector right here behind the stereo for the airbag? There is a lot of connectors under the dash is that the only one I disconnect I don't want this to blow up in my face LOL

thats the right plug. those 2 bolts are out now. so other than the air bag plug there is other plugs to be pulled out. behind the radio is 3 or 4 plugs beside each other. a white, black and 1 or 2 blue. depends if you have cruise or not. the white and black plug come out and go to the harness in the dash. on the drivers side by the fuse box is another 2 plugs. both white that need to be unhooked. there's also a black plug that goes into the fuse box. once thats pulled out the dash should be ready to be pulled out. its easiest to drop the steering column down for the extra space.

Okay I got everything unplugged and unhooked ready to take the dash out it's very heavy... guy at O'Reilly's told me I should have water on the floor if it's my heater core that is bad.. but I don't have any water on my floor. So I'm not sure if it's my heater core. Looking at my Chilton manual the heater core looks like a pain to take out and get to it got very frustrating trying to figure out. I gave up for the day jack the car up get it ready for struts and brake drums on the back then I got one cab corner rusted out that I have to fix.. thanks for your help I really appreciate it keep in touch...Elle

i'm not sure if the whole heater core is filled with water or if it has some air in the top or not. either way, its no good if its smoking. the rear suspension isn't too bad. rather do it than the front. just be careful. the heater core is only held in by a few 12mm nuts and 1 cable to the hvac controls. if you want to do as i did, lowes and home depot has the foam strips to re seal the heater core and vents.

Did you reseal the heater core and vents or replace it? Is the heater core visible once the dash is out? where the glove box was right? I'm still trying to figure out which black box is the heater core

i re sealed everything. the heater core is the one on the left. middle is the a/c and right is the fan. they don't bolt together. just slide into eachother. the heater core will come out infront of the gas pedal under the steering column

Is this for the 420 a automatic front wheel drive

its the same for all. just engine, tranny and front wiring harnesses are different. everything inside and in the back is the same
