Today was not my day. Driving on the interstate I ran something over. A bird also pooped ALL over my car but anyway short story long, I saw the object in the middle of my lane on a 2 lane highway. At first it looked like a small object, non threatening. I thought I could just breeze over it. I looked at it again and by that time it was too late. I couldn't swerve because of a failed sense that someone was in my blind spot. So not wanting to cause an accident I decided against swerving to the other lane. Well, after I ran it over I realized there really wasn't anyone in the other lane. I ran it over and dragged it under my car all the way to the side of the road.

No I wasn't texting or playing with the radio. I had my eyes on the road, it was just one of those moments where you get caught off guard. Luckily, the damage is seemingly minor. Dented the oil pan pretty bad and some scratches on the underside. I realize this could have been MUCH worse. What do you guys think should I replace this oil pan or do you all think it's fine? I drove the car over an hour after this incident. Oil pressure is still great, everything runs like it did before.

Onto the pics:
The dents look worse in pictures. I'll probably just replace it for good measure.

I found out what it actually is here: http://www.safetybumps.com/ I might send them an email about it. Does anyone know if the city or state uses these? It sucks that someones negligence is someone else's misfortune.

Culprit:

I would advice replacing the oil pan. My concern would be the damage is focused around where the oil pick-up is. I personally would not drive it until it is repaired.

That safety bump likely came off of a tractor trailer. I doubt contacting the company will be helpful.

I always hated why our pans never came with reinforcemant plates on the front side of it. They was doing it for years previous and well evos get it but they are newer of course.

As stated its a bit much of a dent and although it might be ok for a few miles its keeping oil pushed to the sides of the pickup. Can either do 2 things, take it off and tap it out and hope its ok, this is not the best way but it works and its cheap to do, folks have been doing this for years.

Second way is replace it with a used but good or new pan,

Damn that sucks. I had a near miss the other day. At least its just the oil pan. I had a dented pan on my old GS worse than that, but that was a POS so I didn't care. 7 bolt pans are plentiful and cheap so I'd definitely replace, at the very least take it off, inspect and hammer out those dents. Hit up Steve Miller.

LOL That's exactly what I did. Thanks @Stangmurdera It's actually a 6 bolt pan though.

I sent them a strongly worded email anyways. I know it's probably not their fault but hey you never know. Took 2 minutes.

7 bolt pans suck. Good luck finding one that isn't damaged from being pried off the block.

New there are a few mitsubishi dealer sites selling them for $186 shipped

Wow that sucks.

In order for the city/state or even that manufacturer to do anything, Should've stopped on side of road and filled a police report. otherwise contacting a company or Municipality is unlikely to yield any results.

Luckily You weren't behind the truck when it fell Off.. I would not want that thing bouncing at me Windshield high at 65mph. Gnarly.

Hm I didn't even think of that. Maybe if it actually cracked the pan or caused other damage where I would have needed a tow truck I would have stuck around to get a police report. I was on the side of the road maybe 5 minutes.

I would replace the pan myself. Not really that difficult to do and your oil pan is extremely important. As far as what came off, looks exactly like what the guys up here use when pumping out our used coolant, oil, etc. It's a cap to prevent damage to the hose fittings. Sucks, but honestly there is really nothing you can do about it. Getting off cheap considering its just an oil pan, could've been way worse.

MY oil pans been dented for the life of my car I havnt had any issues, however yours looks twice as bad as mine. Yes there is an oil pick up tube that may have been damaged you dont want this to be restricted or you may have an engine failure due to low oil pressure. Pop it off, inspect the clearance, maybe you can hammer the dent out maybe not. This will reduce the total volume of oil as well.

I have a slightly less dented pan for 6 er , just pm me if your interested If you cover the shipping I'll just give it to you.

I've actually never seen a pan NOT dented ha-ha but that is very dented. Bad luck dude! Really bad luck
