Im about to install a set of Manley single valve springs #22125-16 and Ti retainers #23125. Im using a set of kelford 272's and run 40psi @ 8750rpm on an EVO 3 4g63, I was on std evo 9 springs, seats and retainers but think im well overdue for an upgrade. Manly has 2 different part#'s for springs, one to suit DSM 1990-1999 and another to suit EVO/DSM 1990-2008 (I have these ones). Both use different retainers with the step at different heights, My Question is can I just shim these up a bit? and have I ended up with the high lift version? Max lift on the dsm spring# is 0.460'' with seat pressure [email protected]'' and the Evo/Dsm# I have is max lift .580" with seat pressure [email protected]".
I would need to shim it 0.12 (WTF thats huge) just to get it back to the seat pressure/max lift specs of the dsm spring???

Bumping this because I'm interested in this too. Manley springs and dks 272's. Bought the head used with shims, not sure I I need to use them or not...

Take your springs to someone who has a spring gauge that way you can see how much shims its gonna take to get to 104lb seat pressure. Shimming springs is nothing new but I would stop at a certain amount of shims. Using springs with the desired spring pressure at the correct installed height is the way to go. Using too many shims might not let the spring seat or the spring itself positively locate in the spring pocket. Just my 2 cents here.

Why would they even make them like that? Why would you want over 0.580"/14.7mm of lift on a single no progressive/ beehive spiring? I see your point about loosing the spring locator when shimming that big. Anyone else got an opinninon about shimming it 0.122"?

Sounds like you need a set of the kiggley thick spring seats...

That would be too much. He'd only have about .017" of coil bind clearance.

IH - lift - kiggley locator = coil bind clearance
1.550 - .433 -.150 = .017"

Not sure what will happen to the pressures. Would have to check them at installed and open heights. If you're looking for 110# on the seat, then why not just use the dual springs? The're around 110# @ 1.550" where the 22125 are only 66# @ 1.580.

I only just realised the other spring I was comparing to was the dual springs, the website I first checked them on listed them as a single hence the confusion. The only reason I want to use these singles is because I already have a full set of springs and Ti retainers and I don't really have any more money to spend on duals.

I checked the spring pressures with my home made tester and found the following pressures at close to 1.580- 66# with no shim. With a .040 shim it went up to 75# or 14% increase. With a 0.114" shim it went up 91.5# or 38.5% increase. What's your opinion on using a 0.114 shim then? It still gives me 0.0329 clearance from the max valve lift for the springs. Would that be ok for the kelford 272 big ramp rates or even the kelford 280s??

I know this 2 years old, but I found it searching so I'll add to it. I also have the 22125 kit (single spring).

Why couldn't you shim under the seat? As in, cylinder head casting / shims / seat / spring?

I'm running smaller cams (genuine HKS 272's), and curious as to a reliable rev limit setting (is 9k too much)? This is a driver (not my daily, but I intend to put 10k miles on a year plus track passes).

I have enough turbo to use all 9k rpm.

You can place a shim under the seat to get the pressure where you want it. Just be sure to check for coil bind clearance. Too much shim could put you into bind.

Thank you. I was aware of the binding situation. I just wasn't sure if it was possible. (Cast iron Chevy heads shim under the valve seat, but that's cast iron vs aluminum). I'm still learning.

I don't believe my cams are an issue. Manley says .580" max valve lift including the rocket arm ratio, mine are probably low to mid .400's if that.

I spoke with a tech today at Manley (12-14-2015), they set the max revs (re limited), at 10k on the spring with there locks and titanium retainers.

On a low lift / short duration cam (HKS 264, GSC S1, etc he said keep it under 9,500 rpm.

Large cams .425" or larger (lift at the valve), under 8,500 is recommended. 8,900 max safe rpm.

I'm going to have to measure my setup once the head is assembled. Hopefully my head casting is decent and doesn't require too much shimming. Manley says cool bind is .950" (950 thousandths), at 1.580" install height. We shall see!
