I have a 95 eclipse. I was pulling out of the gas station and noticed that my speedometer stopped working and the car wouldn't shift out of first. When I got home and popped the hood, I noticed it was very hot, and the Trans fluid was low. Hoping that someone has some ideas or knows what's wrong.

please create car profile with as much info you can. This will help us help you. This sounds like could be electrical issue. I would start by getting it scanned for an codes. Fyi since it is a 95 dun let anyone say they can't scan it. Ask they have to do ia run as 96.

I believe you are talking about your automatic transmission . what i think happened is your output speed sensor went which the trans needs for shifting and also works the speedometer . your trans will go into limp mode and you will have only second gear . you should have a check engine light when this happens . first thing is scan the code then check the trans fluid level in park and then you might have to change the senor . with the hood open the sensor is in front of the trans on the drivers side . front of the trans meaning the front of the car not the side where it bolts to the engine .

if it's hot then id check the fluid as soon as possible. hoping the tranny isn't fried after that. it'd have some heat but shouldn't be too hot. check fluid level or better yet change the fluid. if its low on fluid it won't work right. if your car is a gst or gsx its a tranny driven speed sensor. if its a gs or rs then its a wheel speed sensor.

your speed sensor is in the tranny pull it out and see if the gear fell off or is stripped. or even the plug came off. its a few things to check

this trans doesn't have a gear for the speedometer . the trans controller gets an input from an output speed sensor . its the same trans that Chrysler uses .

I started the car again, and everything was fine. I floored the pedal and it switched gears around 4.5 rpms. It seems fine now, but I hope it's not a problem that's going to recure over and over. Thank you for all your guys imput. And if anyone knows why that would happen and then go away, I'd be happy to hear your opinion. Hopefully it was just a malfunctioning sensor or something.

There was a reason it happened and in my experience it will happen again. Keep close eye on it. As they suggested may or sure all fluids are good, changed and full. Still wouldn't hurt to have things tested to see what's really going on.
I have a 95 gs manual and it's been schooling me LOL.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try to get a friend of mine to test it or try to find someone to test it for cheap and see if there are any errors on there.
