Good Afternoon all,

I sold my first talon many years ago, and have regretted it everyday since. I have convinced my wife that i NEED another tsi and she has agreed. Having been out of the game for a bit, I just want some more seasoned eyes to look this car over. I think it is a good price if the car is in the shape he states. My only hangup is the .4 overbore, isn't that the max? Other than that, what do you guys think. Can't wait to be back in the warm embrace of a DSM again.

Looks good. Needs the 2gb spoiler put back on, nightshade taken off, and those terrible headlights removed.

I agree with the spoiler it just adds something to the 2Gs. As well as the nightshade. I must admit I kind of like the lights though :|.

I like talons without the thumbnail. If you're going all black, you need different wheels that are also black or at least paint those black. The font is sitting much lower than the rear, I'd ask about that. Price is a touch high. See if you can get him to the $5750-$6000 range at least.

I would question about who, where, when the work was done, and tuning. Running that kind of overbore IS pushing things...unless its all been done professionally. It could just be the motors already been blown and thats how far they had to hone it out to get a concentric cylinder

I would question that mod list too, get receipts for everything, i.e., engine work, ECMLink V3, etc - basically anything that can't be confirmed visually like a Greddy bov. If you don't know what a ECU with a ECMLink chip looks like visually do your homework, same thing with the turbo and everything else the seller is claiming has been done. I can't imagine buying a DSM thinking it has all these things done to it and it ends up being stock...

The thing's that concern me just looking at the engine bay and the mod list -

  • The bov is VTA and he's running the stock MAS. (noob move)
  • He has 560cc injectors/Walbro 255 pump installed but lists that ECMLink V3 is NOT installed yet, how's he correctly for all that add'l fuel? (noob move)
  • List's engine specs (including the .40" overbore which is impossible, prob .040") but doesn't say anything about it being a 6-bolt, which it appears to be looking at the 1g CAS and the waterpipe/t-stat setup. (noob move)
  • Unsure of the head gasket:aha:

If it were me/my money I'd print off that entire list and take it with me when I looked at the car, going line by line verifying visually or asking for a receipt, etc. Don't forget to bring a compression tester to check engine health and check under the car for torn CV boots, cracked/brittle suspension bushings, etc. that can add to the total cost of getting it "road worthy". You'd be surprised how many DSMer's ignore basic maintenance items but have a $2k turbo/$800 exhaust manifold and you can eat off the valve cover.

EDIT
Check for rust over the strut towers, it appears like there might be some on the driver side.

.40 over isn't really pushing it.

Buy a 1g! Ha-ha I am a little biased. :D
Receipts and pictures of the motor build are critical. And if he had the motor built I would definitely pick his brain about what kind of break in was done. Hopefully it's not just a list of upgrades the owner before him did.

Double check with the machine shop that he might have taken it too, and check their references on work quality. If this was like a 2 or 3k DSM, I wouldnt go through so much foot work. But 6k is a chunk of change. You could find a completely unmolested example for 3k, then build it all how you want it, knowing exactly how it was all done.

Yeah little concerned about the tranny oil, synchro mesh eghhhh.... I mean dude goes through the trouble for redline in the rear end, why not put some mt90 in the tranny too. And the cosmetic head gasket I "think"? I could tell you EXACTLY every single torque spec on my build, cause I built it. Every nut and bolt, and every odd smell, rattle, and oil leak that it somehow still has ha-ha it is a DSM after all

Gofer hit the nail on the head. Critical to make sure he isn't lying and the only reason that car is worth anywhere near that much money is the built motor and even then the price is a bit high. The stance of that car is aweful and he has completely blacked out tails which are bound to get you in trouble yet the front windows are not tinted and the headlghts are clear/chrome. :notgood:

.40" over is huge, which is why I question the knowledge of that cars owner. If you had the block bored to .40" over you'd be in the next cylinder over.

That's like saying your spark plugs are gapped to .28". I'd like to see a spark plug gapped over a 1/4" and a 4g63 bored to almost 1/2" on each cylinder.

Right, let me rephrase. I'm sure he meant .040 as that is also what i meant. I had a misplaced a decimal and a zero.

40 over is the max Mitsubishi recommends its in the shop manual . the motor in my car is 40 over . I don't see any problem with that.

1. Threads in which you gauge the value of someones admiration to a vehicle are, kind of a waste of time no one can tell you what you think you should be getting.

2. Your wife is awesome. Many can learn a thing or two from her.

3. the car looks very clean and well maintained, that speaks volume considering to many unqualified children get there hands on this platform simply to ruin it.

4. Our opinion holds no weight, nor should it on your decision. If you like it get it, if not then don't!

5. The price.............. simply put its not up to a blue book or someones arbitrary standard, its up to you; if you value it at that price then its a good deal.

I think it really just depends on what you want your dsm for I think u can buy a lot of car for 6500 cash. You can definatly find a project with tons of mods alredy if u don't wanna start stock for around 3k. Ima craigslist junkie and have sold a hand full of dsms wit nice mods myself for around that price. Also its coming into winter project DSM will be had for cheep. I paid 2500 cash for a 95 awd tsi with a 16 g running 25 psi with an afc tuner it was a little hoop d but... I have tons of cash leftover to make it sweet... I also drove the car 2 hrs home smoking my hemi charger I drove down w friends to get it having a blast.. rember your buying a dsm for fun not to break the bank its poor mans evo LOL.
