Coil on plug, is it worth it?

the general consensus you would find if you searched is that it is a waste of money unless you are north of 600hp. im not sure what you mean by a 'difference in tuning' but as far as performance goes the stock ignition has been proven time and time again to be pretty stout.

It depends on how you plan on doing it. If your just going to get a cop plate and coils and plug it in then its going to be downgrade from stock. You will need some kind of aftermarket CDI system to make it even perform equal to stock.

Without using a CDI ignition box a typical COP implementation on a DSM seems to perform worse than the factory ignition due to compromises you have to make for it to work.

Since the performance is questionable you have to wonder if the people running them are doing so for looks.

Is it a worth it? Well that depends. A better question to figure out is if it's even necessary for your setup. Its not really hp directly that is the limiting factor of the ignition. it is airflow and stock coils and wires have been proven to be good to 750+whp

I have a COP setup and a dynatek CDI, if it didnt look so damn clean i probably would go back to using wires though. I find that it isnt as desirable for a daily driver application becasue i noticed that compared to the stock setup it isnt as smooth at idle and light throttle, but i have absolutely zero issues under boost.

I'm running a cop setup I built for my gvr4, paid $10 for it LOL. Havnt had one issue and seems to be much smoother running than the old stock packs I took out. Granted they where super rusted out and looked like garbage. So might be the reason for my experience, but Seems to be working just fine. I'm not using a Cdi either by the way. Soon as I get my new trans in I'll post a log of my tune. ;) Cars at 17-18psi at the moment and a real nice timing curve. Just waiting for me to crank up LOL. And then the 68hta haha

I ran COP with CDI's for a while. I had 2 different MSDs, and a Dynatek CDI. Eventually all of those CDI's bit the dust. Just not a reliable solution IMO compared to OEM. I switched back to oem wires/coils and never had any issues at 32 psi. Stock works well for 99% of the DSMers out there. No need to waste money where its not needed.

Setup in my Mitsu 4-door. 700whp+, 40psi+ boost. Stock ignition, NGK wires, NGK BR8ES gapped at 18 thou. :) I had the same exact setup in my old Talon. Time in sig.

For shits and giggles, I turned the boost UP and made a pull. Clean. No misfires.

Shoud i run NGK BPR6ES or NGK BPR7ES or NGK BR8ES or NGK BPR9ES???
I was thinking 6 or 7 ...
but idk??? 25-30 psi with F.I.C. 1650cc high-Z injectors... Do i really need 8s?

sorry if my questions on spark plugs are kinda lame .
but i have to know, i normally use copper plugs.
Anyone use iridium and if so why?
Im just wondering because I've never used them.
I've been reading about this subject just out of curiosity but im now confused a bit LOL

Bsmart82 over on Talk, as well as a few other people I can list by name, have all made 500awhp on a COP setup with no CDI. I adored my COP setup and will always run one. Even with junkyard coils, I noticed smoother idle, quicker throttle response, and over all over the entire RPM band was smoother. And yeah, it helped like hell not having to worry about crossed plug wires, keeping them isolated, or finding a place to mount the huge coil bracket and coils. It cleaned up install, and made removal that much easier. Never had a single issue from my built G4CS/3076R several years ago, to the 16G/SD 1G from a couple years back. Over all, "is it worth it" is subjective and everyone is going to have an opinion. My opinion, from my own personal experiences, is yes. It is. :)

I like my COP until it's time to set the base ignition timing ROFL

Nope- 100% stock. Plugs were gapped around .018".

I'm impressed by that. I get blowout at .018" with my stock ignition, but my plug wires are older and I believe I have a voltage problem. Dave's results give me hope that I can fix the issue without a CDI box, though I don't think having a CDI and increasing the plug gap would be a bad idea on a turn key street car.
