OP -Dude, you should be stoked how much this community cares about you! They want you to succeed and have some fun. If you love computers and machines, double down on science/math now, you could be in engineering school on the west coast in three years. In seven you could be making over 100k. You'll get what you want eventually. Just live intentionally.

Anyhow, peeps, thanks for the support. I suppose I'll wait to buy a GST or a GSX (hopefully a GSX). I just couldn't take the no from my mom who knows nothing about cars.

@Mauispyder Honestly I didn't expect all this, but thanks ^.^
As for the community caring for me, why? I'm a probationary member who's only recently joined this site and had his passion reawakened, but is car-less.

Your in for a long life of suck if your 16 and have this attitude already.

This statement about sums it up.

You're young, eager, but have no patience or life experience. We were all there once.

Instead of trying to debate with us, simply take our advice, listen to your mother (who is paying for the roof over your head and feeding you), and accept you can't have everything you want right this second.

I'm not trying to be mean spirited or harsh but there's a reality that you'll just have to accept.

I didn't get a vehicle until I was 18 because my parents refused to let me have a license, so I feel your pain. Take it from us who have all been there and done that. Learn to be patient. It's an extremely valuable skill.

I am 24 and a very skilled mechanic. I was 19 when I bought my first project. I did okay with it actually, had all the head and block machine work done properly, kept saving and buying parts trying to do it all right. I was driving fast soon as I got it on the road. Ended up flipping a week after it was on the road. I had a spare car that a dropped the motor into. Wasn't very nice but it wasn't terrible either. Swapped the engine and got back on the road. All stock everything, then I got the upgrade bug. It just kept getting worse from there. Kept trying to upgrade my daily and drive it all at the same time. Made plenty of mistakes. If I didn't have some very helping family and friends I would have been stuck a long time ago.

The engine I spent so long saving to build was now @ very low compression and needed another rebuild. Ended up driving a beat up spyder I got over paid for. Then I ended up getting a 2.4 dohc put together and put it back into the turbo car and drove it hard till I blew the motor in it. Now I'm back driving a worn out spyder I have too much money in. Have ton parts and a couple shells. Now at age 24 I am just wishing I had back all the wasted money I spent and had just kept my car as a stock daily and built a project on the said. All I want now is to save enough back up and buy a nice daily driveable car.

Learn from those who have been there. You first car should ALWAYS be the most reliable car you can find and afford to own. Project cars are side toys. Don't drive your project daily. You may only be 16 but trust 18 comes very fast and a reliable car is what you'll need. Don't be the cool guy that puts all his money into some car to boost his ego for his friends. Most of those guys end up being broke nobody's and the not so cool guys that always did things right end up being the "cool" guys of the future. Cool being the ones that actually have something solid in there life to stand on. Do it right the first time. buy and drive a toyota. Leave your DSM build as a side hobby.

Search Club Diamond Star. In response to your "I planned on getting a custom rebuilt block from JDM" comment now I'm concerned. There is no such thing as a "JDM" 420a and even if you rebuilt the motor that's like pissing in the wind. The money you would spend to do that could be put away to get you into a decent 4g63 car.

Exactly if you are getting JDM for an eclipse it might not be the car for you bud.

I resign. I just couldn't take it from my mom who knows nothing about cars. I suppose I'll wait a while but not forever. I'm determined to get a DSM before I'm 17.

@tylersevo http://www.jdmenginescorp.com/engine_details/mitsubishi_jdm-4g63t-turbo-6-bolts-red-top-engine-only
JDM is a real thing. I meant engine swap, not engine rebuild. my bad.

Alert the FB community of a newcomer ^.^
Let me preface this by saying I'm only 17 as well. I was in your shoes and had to learn a lot about life real fast over these past couple years. I am very impatient and despise thinking that I missed an opportunity. When I was 16 before I even had my license I bought a DSM against everyone telling me not to. Now in the little over a year I've had it, I've been on many adventures. I've learned more about cars and driving in general in this one year than any other time in my life. Both from the incredible folks here on the forum, and first hand experience. Now with all those good times, about a month into having the car I discovered all kinds of nasty problems to fix. Boost leaks, exhaust leaks, rebuilding BOV, servicing the tcase and lots more. I am not 100% financially independent yet either as I'm 17 and still live at home. Most things I can pay for (gas, minor parts, tires, what have you) but when surprises come, you're out of luck and out of money. My timing belt broke last month after only 10,000 miles. I never would have seen that coming. It's taking a while to come up with the money to pay for it but I just ordered the last parts. Meanwhile, I've virtually been without a car. It's terrible. Surprises ALWAYS happen. That's why as much as I'm sure you hate hearing it just like I did, I'd listen to your parents. If not from these guys, take it from me, someone your own age (17) still living at home, not quite financially independant, and very stubborn and I've taken the path you're set down. Honestly here's what you should do.

Take your passion for cars and your desire for one and put it towards saving money for the RIGHT one. Trust me you don't want to rush into this like I did. Find out if your school has an ROP program that will allow you to work part time at O'Reilly or AutoZone even to get some money and some financial independence. In the mean time, stick around here reading threads until you can actively contribute to them. Go watch Jafromobile's videos on youtube and just learn as much as you can about these and cars in general so when you finally have enough money do buy a dsm, the RIGHT dsm, you'll KNOW its the right one. With the car situation, Get something cheap good on gas and RELIABLE so your parents don't have to dump money in YOUR car. They will appreciate you doing that and then you can have a project car, AND a fun toy and if the toy breaks, you'll have something to fall back on until you can fix it.

Look at what all these people, people that understand your situation are saying. We were all there. You just need to keep yourself busy in the meantime. We all are trying to help you man. Please let us.

For the Op asking about engine swaps and stuff. Pro-tip - generally guys that are truly capable of doing stuff like that are too busy figuring out how to get it done, and actually doing it, to ask how to do it.

@Chumpaumpalumpa - holy cow dude, 17? I thought you were in your early 30's by your contributions and attitude!

@jccreszMC - why would a bunch of people you don't know want you to have a good life and try to give you the best advice they can?
1) we've all felt like you before, whether it was a year ago (Chump) or 33 years ago (me)
2) we all like DSM for various reasons
3) this site (from what I've seen) is almost all good hearted people (who else could love a DSM?)
All of the above adds up to us feeling empathy for you, we imagine ourselves in your situation, you don't have to take the advice given, but it's given from decades of experiences and the spirit of friendship. You'll get support from this community no matter what path you take.

Wow thanks man that means a lot. I find that there is always a lot to learn, and that there is always someone who has been in that situation before and I haven't been led astray so far by taking their advice and actually applying it. That is the difference between knowledge and wisdom. So OP please make the wise choice. But, like you said, this is an awesome community. We don't put up with idiots and douchebags unless they're willing to change. If they don't, bye bye we dont need you. That's what makes us so unique. Almost more like a family than just a forum sometimes.

edited- 33years ago not 39! though I guess when your my age, 6 years one way or the other doesn't matter!ROFL

OP you should do like Chump says and read the articles here and watch all the Jafro vids, and do like a lot of us do and read threads on here instead using Facebook!

I'm working a part time job at McDonalds right now. Why I say "not financially independent" is because my parents lock away my money in a bank account I don't have access to. My school doesn't have an ROP program and I couldn't enter them anyways because I'm not too great at paying attention (Straight F's, but I just can't fix em no matter what D: )

Then you ABSOLUTELY need contacts. Go find your field of interest and develop contacts in that area. Be genuine and honest. Those are hard qualities to come by today so people appreciate that and it can get you far. Trust me, I've experienced it first hand.

yea to put my input with all the other members i bought my gsx when i was 19 now i am 21 i got it for 1500$ sweet right well with a week of driving the car my balance shaft broke costing me a shit load of money i didnt really have at the time being a student in school and i was lucky my parents helped me get the car back on the road at the time. reason being my dad had 2 1gs when they where new. But lets face it your parents are always right and now i am sitting on a gsx fully built bottom end and ready to push some power so in the end just save your money and dont run before you can walk with this platform.

Chumpaumpalump (chump to me) is spot on and he has learned a great deal for his age (you surprised me to man). He has come down the same road and I respect him and his opinions and I'm 51! Do you have any Vocational Technical schools close that offer Auto Mechanics? My son is a 17 year old senior this year and he is struggling with the TWO real classes he has but he is getting his grades up (they are similar to yours) but he is solid A's in his VoTech class that I got him into since he has helped me build my DSM, and what a big help he has been all while LEARNING. He can even read a DSMLink log and I am very impressed but it is because he is INTERESTED in that subject, cars. Kiddo, keep your chin up and don't get discouraged at your parents or us, we really do care about you enough that you have 3 pages of posts trying to help you out. Be patient, when the deal of your lifetime comes around, believe me, you WILL know it! :) I look forward to helping you out in the future and I don't know you, but sure hope you are still here in a year which will show us all that you have taken advice and respect all of those that have helped you out. I know I respect each and everyone one on this site for all of there assistance because even though I have built cars since I was 13, I sure didn't know anything about these cars until two years ago and the good people, guys and gals, on here have always pointed me in the right direction. Man just hang tight and keep a daily look out on craigslist and your local area and what you are dreaming for will come to you! Trust me! I wish you the VERY best!!!! Marty

First of all, doing poorly in class is your personal choice. Take responsibility for your actions. Literally anyone without a mental disability can achieve a college degree. Its your choice. If you cant muster up the drive to finish school what do you really think you'll accomplish in life? Other than prison.

By the sounds of it, you're a 16 year old high school drop out working part time at mcdonalds? Good grief man, modding cars should be your absolute last concern. Get your life straight ffs. You're going to have an extremely difficult and back breaking life without an education.

Im sorry if this comes off offensive but from reading these posts you are in for a rude awakening.

I'm a 10th grader who actually does want to drop out but can't due to
super-strict get it right 100%
parents. I have my issues and am more of a hands on learner, not a classroom learner. I'm man enough to admit that no, I'm not living to full potential, but I could if I had a drive.

Having a car would give me something else to focus on outside of work, school, and family.

Honestly I'm thankful for all you peep's support. I've decided to wait
and I may end up getting @5taR 's project DSM if no offers are made withing a few weeks
for a GS-T or a GSX.

You sound just like my son! Try hard to get through this school period and maybe by then you will have decided on what to do for the future. At your age, not everyone knows what they really want to do with their lives, I see it everyday in my son. If it is INTERESTING, he does good. If it is BORING he does bad but we all have to go through it so try your hardest young man, you CAN do it. Hope to see you on here more in the future!!! You already made a good decision! :thumb:

I'm glad I'm not the only one!
I know exactly what I want in my future (or at least within 10 years): a DSM and to be a game programmer...

But with all things coming down to a truth, my mom (the control freak who's always saying "I know best no matter what") keeps telling me "You can't do what you want till you do perfect in school! Anyways, I'm going to hold you in school until you're 21, and you'll never drive!" That is a direct quote from her words.

It's pretty sad.

Try hard then! You can definitely program.
Try doing this-

On top of a piece of paper write what you want to do (game programmer)
Then Internet look up how one gets there.
Write the steps down in reverse order, for example

Game programmer
Intern at gaming company
Degree in computer related field
Transfer to 4year college
Enroll in community college
Graduate high school or achieve GED
Do better in my next math class
Do better on my next math test
Do better on my next math homework assignment

You can break down each step to smaller steps ( like ask for helpin a class or try online mini classes like khan) and just focus on achieving one thing and ignore the rest for now.

Good luck sir, see you in the forums.

Try A.D.D. and mild Aspergers on for a go.
That combo makes it difficult to focus on things I'm not interested in. If I wanted to focus on something I'm not interested in, I have to try really hard or even my pencil becomes a toy.

I like that having difficulty focusing on things you aren't interested in is a 'disease' now. When I was a kid that was considered normal.
