It looks funny. I also have a light bar with a 3rd brake light in it. That's 3 center brake lights....

You know what also looks funny? A non-working light on your deck lid ;) It will be more noticeable on lighter colored car.

Plus, it wouldn’t pass a safety inspection in my state, they do not care if it is “extra”, any non-working light is grounds for rejection (even aftermarket “driving lights”). I always found this rule pretty ridiculous. :banghead:

Do like how the spoiler looks without the “center post”! I am not even sure why it is there… How did you closed off the center post in the spoiler? Just epoxy/bondo over it?

I have every intention of shaving the factory deck lid light before going to paint this spring, leaving just the light bar and the spoiler's 3rd brake light visible, illuminated or not.

Shaving the center post leaves a hole in the deck lid. I need to fill it along with the hole left in the spoiler as well. I intend to use expanding foam to build up/fill in the spoiler's hole, shaving it clean enough that I can then have a a surface to fiberglass.

The center post is there to route the wires through the hatch/deck lid to the brake light. To delete it means Cox had to get creative and re-route the wiring...

:dsm:

1. Spyders do not have any wiring in the spoiler
2. The high-rise spoiler seems to accomplish the wiring without anything in the center.

;)

Center-less spoiler looks so much better! I just do not know if I want plug just the center hole in the deck. Seems to me that if I am starting plugging things up, I shoudn't stop :)

The high rise wing has no wiring in it because the 3rd brake light is within the hatch glass, not on the wing. The spyder's wing doesn't either like you said, but it's the same wing as the hardtop low rise wing, just with a cap where the 3rd brake light is supposed to be. Since the wings are the same, I always wondered why Mitsubishi placed the light in the spyder's trunk lid.

I suspect the third was put in the deck lid to reduce the potential for glare only visible in the spyders due to the lack of a roof or dot-matrix printing around edge of the rear glass normally found in a hatchback. Either way, I don't have any glare so I could be wrong. Perhaps the addition of the spoiler in the Spyder was an afterthought.

Creative indeed. I drilled a hole in the deck lid and in the left-side foot of the spoiler, then fished the wiring through.

Tonight I wired up the spoiler. Since I've had to make some extra holes in things, the stock connector wouldn't do any longer, so I opted for a 2-wire quick disconnect that kept the holes smaller and will allow me to pull the spoiler when it comes time to paint.

You can see the polen build up here along with how I opted to run the 3rd brake light wiring.

Picked up the supplies to fill the center post hole in the spoiler and delete the factory spyder 3rd brake light. Why on earth Mitsubishi had to include the center post, I have no idea. The spoiler is plenty rigid without it. Having it removed really cleans up the back end.

...Subtile mods that most DSM guys wouldn't even notice...

I do like this mod!

But... I removed my spoiler and was surprised by the weight of the center section! So I put EVERYTHIG on the scale (3 spoiler sections, metal brackets and hardware), total weight was 10.7lbs. Not a huge amount, but you find a few such "optional" items and now you are talking ;).

I did an extra OEM led mod on my Talon Spyder, turned out my spoiler was damaged at the 2 of the 3 mounting spots.
So I made a trip to my local wrecking yard and success found a already black spoiler. (from a hard top DSM)
I already knew about the the spyder LED on the trunk lid. With some examinations I toke the stop light harness from the hard top made a small hole connected 2 wires...and now my Talon Spyder has a Hard top/Spyder feature, fully functional.
I love it.

Everything has been shaved up. My painter is handling the final prep.

To fill the spoiler, I sanded everything smooth and back filled the hole with expanding foam, smoothed it out and glazed it. The 3rd brake in the trunk was a little harder since it can be seen. The original light is still in there, but I was able to glaze it once I removed some rubber trim.

Everything is at paint this week aside from the chassis which has been finished and returned.

This is my, newly completed Talon Spyder AWD project! I love how it came out, other than tail light wiring... My turn signals are all messed. They are fast flashing (like bulb is out) and turn on with the brake light. I looked at the tech article on this topic, but it doesn't match what I have in my car... Has anyone else encountered this?
