Most guys make their own kit, and select OE and aftermarket parts and taylor it more to their needs n goals.

Yes it costs a bit more to do it that way, but you are not buying parts twice, or worse building the engine twice.

The common thought is

NPR pistons and rings
ACL or King bearings
OE Mitsu Oil pump
OE timing belt and pulleys (some do run gates)
Mitsu Hydro Tensioner
OE gaskets or Fel pro (some have gone out side this and had mixed results)

Do people reuse their stock rods?

Nothing wrong with using your con rods again as long as they are checked and in good shape.

If your goal is over the 400-425 hp, I will suggest you look into forged pistons and H beam rods.

Most the time, No

Just what do you think you need to do?
What is your goal?
what will be the end use of the engine? car?
What is your budget?

I'd piece it together myself. I would only use an oem water pump and oem oil pump. Like others said it will def be more expensive but it will be cheaper in the long run. Jnz who is a vendor on this site has a ton of oem parts and they ship very quick and have excellent customer service. I would start with them. They also have aftermarket parts too so you can get everything at one time. And there prices are good too.

Well my car has 170k miles. Never rebuilt. I dont plan on getting rid of the car anytime soon and its also my DD. But I need to do valve stem seals soon but i figured I would just get a remaned head from clearwater cylinder heads for 350. And now I figure I might as well just rebuild the block as well.

My goal in the end will maybe be 350whp. For a DD thats plenty for me. If i want more speed ill get on the gsxr. But Im getting a 14b built for myself and im just going to stick with that until I feel like getting a 16g.

And im hoping to stay under 3 grand. I just spent the last hour pricing all the parts, NPR pistons and rings, main and rod bearings, timing belt kit, oil pump, gasket set, cometic head gasket, and arp head studs and that all came out to 1200. I would love to do the labor myself but I live in an apartment and have no where to do this. I need a garage........

But here in bloomington we have ONE machine shop and he qouted me 1000 bucks to machine my head... i feel like thats a rip off so im gonna call other shops in other cities..
