Hey, new to the forum, and my GSX alike.

My GSX is very quick in a straight line, but handles like a Winnebago pulling a trailer on flat tires, especially compared to my other vehicle (Sti, 94 rx7)

I know you can mod any vehicle, coils,sway bars, ect; my question is if it's even worth it and it good handling can be achieved without 10k in modifications. If it's just good it a straight line, all be it. But this would be a very fun car if it handled as well as it went straight (467whp) thanks

Any car can be made to handle. It is mainly a question of how much you are looking to invest. Even with significant modifications the dsm will never feel as light or noble as a rx7.

I took my car (1gb) to a skidpad challenge and won the modified class pulling 1.349g.

Even with that amount of grip the car does have it does not feel as composed as my cayman s (despite the dsm having greater performance in every way).

What suspension/chassis mods do you have to achieve 1.3g? That's not bad at all

Yes

All I have done to my car's suspension is the following. (this was YEARS ago though so things are a bit fuzzy)

* Replaced worn bushings.
* Replaced rear sway bar with 24mm RM unit (maybe it was 25mm?)
* Swapped OEM wheels for FD3S wheels. (16x8 best I recall) less weight and wider.
* KYB AGX struts
* Eibach prokit springs
* Urethane sway bar bushings front and rear (came with sway bar)
* I suppose urethane engine mounts could count as well.

I also have a set of rear toe elem. but have never had a chance to install them. The car handles extremely well compared to stock. Heck if I'm not careful when it's wet out and I goose it too much accelerating from a stop while turning, the rear end will kick out fairly controllably with the throttle. The nose diving is gone, and so is the majority of body lean. (just a hint) And no more plowing into the corners, still understeers a little entering a corner to hot, but that's sort of the fault of the driver the way I look at it. It's still a street car, not a race car, but it wouldn't take much to solve that issue either I don't think, maybe the rear toe elm. would cure it if I installed them?

I really don't have much $ into the suspension though and it's nothing fancy. Again though, my cars not an AutoX car, or race car in any shape or form, but it is leaps and bounds better than stock in the corners.

P.S. I have done other things that help as well, but aren't suspension components.

I have new bushings, eibach springs, Koni yellows in front, and agx in the rear. While not being "race car" in the handling department it is light years better than how it handled before.

Whaa? Couldn't you just go with FEAL and spend around $1600?
The best suspension you're likely to get under a few grand is a ground control/koni setup.

The stiffest, lowest suspension isn't the best handling. The goal of suspension is to keep the tire on the road as much as possible, not looking hella stanced. Go around a high speed bumpy turn with any of the budget coilovers and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Now if all you do is drag race, the budget coilovers work fine.

Have you looked into FEAL? They are one of the higher riding coilovers available and you can pick the spring rate.

Yes. Their coilover is aimed at people looking at the bc/megan etc coilover, but wanting slightly better quality. They are still mostly made from similar parts, just setup better. They aren't trying to compete against ohlins and other top of the line coilovers. The problems aren't with the spring rates, but the dampers. A low cost damper can only be so good.

Not that they don't deserve a place in the market. There is a niche for almost anything. But being one of the best of all the not so good doesn't make them great.

If the suspension is stock a good set of coilovers will make a huge difference. Can you post a few pictures of your car with that hood? I'm thinking about getting one!
I'm actually trying to get rid of this one in favor of a OEM style carbon hood.Its a VIS carbon hood paint matched black. You can still see carbon on the underside.

I will take some pictures and post them tonight.

I was wondering who's hood he was looking at.
Haha right? Either way, here's a picture of mine. The hood you have is sexy and the one I'm looking for. Where did you find it?

I had exactly what donnie had on my 1g plus an st rear sway bar. It wasnt a race car but it was way better than stock. Tires are the most important piece. Just on stock old suspension my 97 is pretty tight with micehlin super sports and evo8 wheels. This car will also receive full bushings, eibach pros, konis, and rm sway bars.

I honestly can't recall the name of the vendor I got my hood from...Damn, now that makes me want to go digging though my folder of invoices for the car, which I hate cause then I start looking at how much $ I have spent over the years LOL.
