Hey guys so im getting closer in the build to were im going to be getting to the motor/transmission i started with the body first. ive been looking around the web and noticing a lot of people making stupid power with stock auto's got me thinking if i should even worry about rebuilding it. its got 110k miles on it i don't know the condition i bought the car non running and just tore it all apart. but at the same time i would imagine i would want the center diff welded so why not just have it rebuilt. im at a toss up any ideas.

i forgot to mention my plans are weekend car/drag im starting with a hx35 because i got one laying around and i may upgrade later depending on how i like it. just from reading around im not so sure if welding the center diff is going to benefit me all too much. i still plan on getting a new vb/tc.

you know i watched this last week this car and one other that i seen on youtube said stock auto is what made me think that 2500 bucks could be used somewere else in my build

2500.00? I built mine for less than 500.00. I did the rebuild myself. If you're going to be throwing some torque at it, just freshen it up with new clutches and seals. A clutch and seals kit is only 250.00 shipped from alto.

how hard is it? i have mechanical skills but ive only seen 1 transmission opened and it was on my cummins and they needed a lot of special tools and presses for that. i wouldn't mind taking it on if its pretty simple and i cant find any videos on it or write ups

Youtube dsm transmission. Transdude did a bunch of them. Atdsm.com has a bunch of information also. I found it pretty simple. I also did all the bushings. I didn't want any problems. Harbor freight sells a bushing driver kit. I also found myself using alternate methods to drive them home.
If you can build an engine, you can do an automatic rebuild.
I kept all my clutches to 1 mm clearance, and keep it clean.
For the assembly lube, I took a big container of vasoline and mixed it with transmission fluid. The mix should come out like engine moly grease. I used that on everything except the clutches and pump. Just pack the pump gears with vasoline and put it together.
Measure the input end play before you take it apart. That determines the thickness of the thrust washer by the pump. If it's good, don't worry about it.
Check out atdsm.com , they have a lot of information about the transmission

Put in a $55 shift kit, $100 kiggly main clutches, an OEM filter, some good fluid and multiple choices for full line pressure shifting. That will get you very far. I started toasting 2 spider center diffs so I welded mine (free) or you have 4 spider options for around $500.

My AT build, including converter, is looking to cost about $2500 total. Not bad.

You want a copy/paste of every part i ordered? It doesn't have all the part numbers for the OEM stuff but it'd get you pointed in the right direction for a full rebuild.
I personally got my stuff through twicks69(TMZ) but you can purchase it through dealer, IPT, metro, etc....
PM and i'll send you the list that i got if you want it.

*I have a 2g, might be some differences but the idea is the same*

I think I have a good plan with the transmission thanks to you guys, pull the center diff and get it welded. New end clutches, main 5 clutch pack, road surge shift box and a ipt converter and I feel like that should get me by for a while. I'm going to do some research to see if I should upgrade the pump or of they are plenty powerful to keep up. Thanks guys

I talked to TRE Jon yesterday about the autos. He said if their is nothing wrong with the trains do not rebuild it. It's better the way it is everything is worn in good. Definitely replace the filter and if you need to you can do clutches but you will have to break them in as well

hm good info i might have to give him a call and chat with him about that, not that i don't believe you just sometimes its better to hear it from the horses mouth you know

Yes he knows his shit. I just picked up a 98 auto awd so I was asking his about it and he said it's been broke in on stock power levels everything is seated how it's supposed to be and that's what you want. He said definitely do a shift kit and oem filter. He also said if I was to rebuild it, the trans wouldn't last as long on a higher hp application

Most definitely he's hard to reach but I picked up my 90 trans on Saturday from him built for daily 600hp can't wait to get it in.

If it's working perfectly now, the list I gave is easy to DIY and will set you up for plenty of power. Add the end clutches if you like.
