Hey guys, I recently bought a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST and I want to change the exhaust. I think the stock exhaust is around 2.25". My question is if I am going to get a full cutback exhaust tomorrow what size should i get if the car is stock for the most performance gains. 2.5in or 3in or any other size. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Depends.

What kind of sound do you want?
What are your long term plans?
Are you going to an exhaust shop or installing a bolt on system yourself?

For best performance 3" but 2.5" is enough for most people anyways.

And welcome to tuners! Someone will be here soon to tell you to use the search function.

Me personally, I would not do anything higher that 3" pipe, you can do what ever on the exhaust tips.

I don't have a catback, but I have a super 44 series flowmaster.

It sounds something like this:

With the 3" will i lose any power on the low end of things? I deff. want sound. Long term plans I'm not exactly sure yet.

No loss.

NA cars may experience power loss with large piping because there is something called scavenging, google it if you're curious. But on a turbo car you want the least amount of backpressure to maximize turbine work.

But yeah, 3" is good you will have a hard time finding a 2.5" catback actually LOL.

You can go with Megan or SRS both are cheap and are on many DSM'ers cars. I personally run SRS (eBay). There are lots of topics in the forums on these kits and they are positively reviewed. They are so cheap and mandrel bends will out perform any exhaust shop crush bent systems.

You will see the most out of the catback if you run a downpipe w/cat delete. (SRS/Megan again). If you keep the stock DP/cat, don't expect a whole lot of gains, although, sounding like a race car does somewhat make the drive a little more fun :)

Upgrade your intercooler pipes with a hard pipe kit (eBay $99) and a NGR or other good BOV, hands down one of the best mods you can do untill you get a full FMIC kit. The 2g soft intercooler pipes and BOv are a joke and your car will sound like a true turbo car (raped ape) once you get those hard pipes on.

Under $500 and you got yourself a free flowing setup and great baseline for when you want to push things a little further.

Very fun modding the Eclipse, just make sure you do your maintenance. Boost leaks will spoil your fun, FYI. Keep these in check and your boost will hit. Timing belt, water pump, et al....you know, you know.

Happy boosting friend. Welcome to the club.

Just to let everyone know i went and put 3in all the way back this morning. It sounds great and flows more freely. Thanks for the help guys.

i just bought one off ebay for my gs, it sounded awesome...had a nice deep tone up to 3k and at idle.. but after 3k rpms it sound way too ricey like a fart can.

IMO, stay away from ebay as much as possible… unless its a genuine aftermarket part or OEM and not a knockoff.

As far as I know, SRS, OBX, and Megan dont seem to be direct copies of anything, Honestly, all the Greddy/HKS exhausts i've seen for DSMs look cheaper than mine, except for the muffler.

Also I disagree when it comes to intercooler piping. It's outlandish that some big brands want so much for stupid aluminum tubes. I almost made my own upper out of exhaust piping because of that on my old car.

So what exhaust did you get? About the tip, just get what you really like since it won't change the sound of your exhaust system.
