interested in buying and hopefully building a 2g dsm preferably a 1999. Want it to be somewhat reliable.. no serious power and for cheap price. Iv been looking and saw some for around3k range. Advice on what car to get anyone? want it to be one that i could work on so i can learn more about it.

As the GSX get's harder and harder to come by due to wrecks and people keeping them, it's the better alternative. You can buy a decent GST for 2-3k! I spent 2500 on mine, it was unmolested and below 100k miles! I love my car, but not having traction when I want and need it is a pita at times, specially in the rain!

Also don't rule out the Talon TSI AWD, it's awd as well!

I also recommend buying an awd car wether it be a Talon/Eclipse, there's a reason everyone seeks this version. I will never buy a fwd car ever again, plus why buy a fwd with intentions on doing an awd swap? Just buy the awd and be done with it, even if costs you a little more.

The stock components of the GSX"s rear tend to break easily "they are close to 20 years old" , so those who get the GST and do the AWD swap are usually swapping in performance parts, not oem. You never know the condition of the drive train as well as how many time's it's been launched! It's all about the pro's and con's! GST's are usually less beat on then the GSX, and the swap can be done for less then 1500$ and handle much more power!

If I can buy a GST unmolested with around 100k miles for 2500$
Dump 1500$ into the AWD conversion + Aftermarket goodies

Compared to a beat up GSX for 4000$ +
Molested, launched, ect

or a Clean GSX for 6000ish...

If you have the cash and don't mind paying for the "have it now" factor, go with the GSX!

If you want a AWD GST + Turbo Upgrade + Tuning for the same price with some work involved "assuming you do your own work" That's the route I'd go!

If my GST could not Be converted to an GSX, or I drove an N/A Eclipse i'd so go the GSX route!

Iv'e tried to read abit about an awd swap, since im driving a spyder gst, wich is kinda rare car where i come from (norway). A gst are fun to begin with, and driving a convertible is pretty awesome aswell, but i feel im missing something, awd. When i was looking for a dsm, i intended to get a gsx, but they are nearly impossible to find. So i ended up with a spydie, so i tought, maybe a awd swap could be something. Any comments on that.

You, who started this thread, dont cheap out on a dsm investmen, gsx mentioned by others, cuz someday, you'll see one and will be thinking, why the f*** didnt i get one of those.

^^^ what he said. Never settle on what you truly want, even if it means you have to wait. If you are patient you will be rewarded eventually. I finally scored a Kona blue 2g awd talon a couple weeks ago. I've wanted one for over 5 years. Granted I like the 1g too since I have one of those too but I drove 8 hours one way with a trailer to get it. Check out this website, it compiles craigslist ads from different states by distance from your zipcode just enter your distance preferences
http://www.searchtempest.com/ sometimes to get what you truly want requires a nice little road trip. Good luck!

I've never heard of GSX rear ends breaking "easily". I know people running up to 500whp on stock rear ends. I also don't see many 2g GSTs going for $2500, regardless of which version you buy I'm sure you would like to buy a "clean" car unless you don't mind undergoing a full restoration. I would just by the awd in the best shape that you can afford. Even if it is cheaper to do the awd swap yourself, you will save a lot of time.

My advice is to find a GST or GSX that hasn't been molested too much by the previous owner.

Haha that's the hardest part. Oh the strange things you will find. Is there a thread about our cars previous owners? If not I should start one.

Do a lot of people do awd swaps in the fwd models?

I see people doing it but you still have to source all the parts. Could be easy or hard depending where ya live and how available parts cars are. I saw one awd in a junkyard around here in the last five years. I grabbed the trans and went back in a day to get the knuckles and the rest of the car was already gone.
A lot of this decision depends on where ya live, how you wanna use the car, and what's available in your area..
Spyders in Hawaii or Tsi Awd's in OHIO..they made one for every situation. :D

You can run 500 on stock rear ends, but the question is for how long!

There are a number of threads talking about the swap and parts to upgrade to during the swap!

Just like the clutch, drive shaft, axles ect.., any of those parts become snacks once you start putting down more power. They were designed to work with 200ish hp! Not 350+!

I've personally helped a member on here that snapped an axle clean off in the transmission just from launching... I would guesstimate he was in the 350hp range.

2 Gear spider's are weak compared to 4's, most guys upgrade to 4's to prevent the failure.
Center Diff is a weak point as well, not to mention if the PO was cheap and put autozone axles in, that's a bad time!

Great thing about the swap is, most parts can be had new and be upgrades along the way instead of just a heads up swap!

Doesn't hurt to get that GST and work on the motor/drive train while you wait for a GSX shell to come along, or a GSX even!

But like the above posts, waiting for something tends to yield better results. Most good deals are only displayed for a few minutes on the web, and even then you are fighting against the clock!

If you see something you like, have cash ready, and CALL the person! Emails will let you down!

Weight the pros and cons to what you want!

Here are a few that come to mind..

GSX
Higher price
Costs more on insurance
Usually beat up more and molested
Hard to come by
Usually Multiple PO's

GST
Cheap Sauce Compared to GSX
Cheap Insurance
Usually unmolested and low miles
Usually 1-2 PO's
Easy to Find

think I'm more on the GST side, now just need more money so i can finally have one. Currently driving a sebring so ill happily upgrade to a gst when i get the money to LOL

Yea man, there is nothing wrong with the GST route. That's where I started. They are plenty of fun.

Yea man! Haha! Not saying GSX's aren't gold because they are. Some people just think they are worth more money than the market does.
