interested in buying and hopefully building a 2g dsm preferably a 1999. Want it to be somewhat reliable.. no serious power and for cheap price. Iv been looking and saw some for around3k range. Advice on what car to get anyone? want it to be one that i could work on so i can learn more about it.

Nothing wrong with a GST, but yea no flooring it in 1st and second gear might get away from you with a really nice gear change :ohdamn:(I'm mostly stock). But like stated before AWD swaps can be done. When I buy my house(hope next year) I am going to do the AWD swap, or a shell. Cause I want more and don't want to have to peddle 3rd so it doesn't spin.

So if I had 3k to spend, would fer sher get AWD (I only had 1500). Eclipse or talon both are beautiful, with the fewest mods done (talons usually little less $). Maintenance is a give in, but you want to learn on it anyway so yea.:idontknow: Just my opinion

Good luck on your search.

I'm plenty happy with my '99 GS. I never got to WOT in this thing so I don't really see a reason for more power. Most '99s don't have head gasket problems. That's the only issue with the 420a I'm aware of.

Awd is definitely worth the premium but if a very nice gst popped up i would consider it to.

I have a 99 automatic rs eclipse with the 420a I'll be selling soon. Reason: I just bought my self a 99 gsx I just have to say night and day diffrence gsx is so much more fun and being manual dosent hurt a bit

AWD drive is awesome sauce! I want badly! But on the freeway, as long as you don't spin, the GST shines! As a GST Owner, I hate first gear, that is all!
I know what you mean. My old srt4 spun 1st and 2nd almost to the point they were useless but when i was in 3rd and had traction it went LOL

thanks for the advice, but yea i wouldn't be flooring it everywhere haha. Id want AWD but so expensive when it breaks, i live in siouxfalls SD so all season weather here LOL awd would be abetter choice but i wouldn't mind fwd because less of a power loss through drive train compared to awd, but on the other side awd has more traction..

DSMs are sweet no matter which model ya get and even if ya don't like your first one it probably won't be your last one so I say just get one. :D I live in Ohio and I think its winter here like 9 months a year. AWD is sweet in the snow. That alone decides it for me. Everybody's situation is different though so get the DSM that's right for you.

Mauispyder, I hear ya but I'm talking about traction not flooring it. With AWD you CAN floor it..is that what you meant? :D

You will eventually regret FWD no matter what. Plus the tires you'll save going AWD will quickly offset the additional cost.

My advice is to find a GST or GSX that hasn't been molested too much by the previous owner. Now, we all know how hard that is with DSM's, but there are some out there if you look hard. If I were in your position, I would look to spend a little more money to get a better care so that you know it hasn't had much done to it (as far as aftermarket parts go) so that you have a clean slate. Be aware that some people who own clean GSX's are going to think they own something worth way more than it actually is. Finding a GST would be much easier.
