So I removed head on my 4g63 awd car. Car is from junkyard and fans don't work and some thing like chocolate ice cream was in radiator so I assumed head gasket was bad or head cracked. So now head is off. Machine shop said its not visibly cracked nor warped. So its getting Pressure tested. So anyways, since the head is off, what should I replace? I see the starter. So I'll be replacing starter. There's a sensor on back of the block. Replace that? I see a steering shaft. Anything to replace on that? Just want to replace things now while I have room. Thanks!

I tried to get in contact with previous owner. He speaks Spanish so no luck LOL. I found it in the junkyard and turned the key for the heck of it and it started right up. Drove it around and it did fine. I believe it was junked because it overheated because fans don't work. Also, they may have been trying to stop some kind of leak by putting stop leak in the radiator. I don't know for sure if its stop leak or just oil mixed with water. Looks like melted chocolate ice cream. Anyway, head is off and I'm looking for suggestions

Inspect or replace all the vacuum lines and wire harness connectors, and clean the engine bay of any accumulated dust and oil [if any is present] clean the coolant system ports on the block with some long wire brushes, [harbor freight sells a nice assortment for cheap] and clean the heater core out too. also might want to replace all the block's core plugs with brass ones, while the head is out, it's easier when th head is off.

hydro test all 16 valves and check for leaks. Check valve stem seals if engine was burning oil. Get gen3 lifters. Clean out carbon deposits around valves and on top of cylinders. Do a port and polish of the head next

A new set of valve springs and vition blue valve stem seals.

I'd replace the heater hoses while you can. Almost impossible to get to them once the head is on.

Pretty sure you're already doing all the timing components so I'd replace the water pump while you're in there. Oil pump sprocket has a small gasket on the shaft that I'd also replace. I'd also torque that sprocket down with red locktite. Saw the nut come loose on a couple of oil pumps that ate thru the front cover.

I'm going to be replacing all rubber hoses with new hoses. I'll change oil sprocket gasket and use the locktite. thanks for the suggestions. :) any more are welcome.
