Hey there,

I have an annoying rubbing/humming sound coming from the right wheel when driving and turning the steeringwheel to right hand side, even when doing it at the tiniest bit. When I take left corners or drive straight, the noise is gone. It began on a 800 miles trip on highways and country roads about 3 weeks ago. I can hear it at about 30mph and up (then it gets louder). Driving home half that distance didn't seem to worsen the problem.

I jacked up the car and tried to push on the front right wheel. When pushing and pulling with my hands at 3 and 9 o'clock I can feel a bit of minimal play, but nothing at 6 and 12, though.

My front wheel hubs are about 5 years old and installed by a professional mechanic, my tie rods and ends are about 2 years old. Every part was a quality one. I want to replace all the struts and springs with a set of coil-overs, but parts will be here not until the next 8 weeks. I need to replace my brake pads in the front, but I couldn't think of that causing the problem.

What could cause this problem? I thought about the wheel bearings myself, but I wonder why the new ones only would last less than 5 years, knowing these are the best ones I can get in my country with a pricetag of 150€ (170$)/ea

Same noise for me if it sounds like a rub noise, but mine does left and right it sucks.. Uhmm I heard that it has to do with the suspension not really sure... But I think it's power steering because it started as soon as my serpentine belt went out... Check your belts that go to power steering and replace them regardless. Hope this helps.

Remove wheel and check the brake caliper to see if it no longer slides on it's lock and guide pins (may have to remove pins). They may be rusted or stuck and need cleaning/lubrication.

May also be the wheel bearing.

Not as likely but easy to do: Check CV joints by going 1 MPH in tight circles left and right to see if hear clicking.

Thank you guys, I'm going to check that as soon as the weather gets better.

I want to add some information:

I read a couple of things and comparisons on the internet and IMO when turning the wheel to the right it sounds like a low pitch woodpecker on speed!

And for a longer period now I have a louder squeak when driving slowly around a corner (e.g. when parking the car or at traffic lights). It sounds like an old graveyard gate, haha. It's no clicking sound.

Hope you have gotten the issue resolved. If not you should also try either greasing ball joints if you have the fittings. tie rod ends and ball joints that are not properly lubed can make a nice hum or vibration sound while driving or turning. Let us know if you have found a solution to your troubles
