I have a 96 GSX with 97 swap, the po had engine work done. He said CP pistons and stage1 cut cams. The car takes forever to start up, crank and crank and crank.. This morning I was cranking it for a good while then I started hearing this grinding noise. It sounded horrible.. Here's a little sample of the noise.

I need help for the starting problem, it takes way to long. & now this happens..

The ect can cause a problem on these cars, the ecu needs its input to calculate fuel enrichment. Do yourself a favor and don't get an auto zone replacement, I've seen so many pos parts get returned.

Starter engagement looks off. It's relatively easy to pull out to look at and test. Just be careful with the signal wire and don't forget to reconnect your main ground.

I doubt the clutch or pressure plate, I was cranking the car a lot 2 days ago trying to get it to start, it would start up for a second to like 200 rpms but I would keep cranking it cause it wouldn't stay started. Was cranking for a good 5 mins cause I thought the hard start was coming from the stage1 cams but it was the coolant temp sensor.

What do the engagement teeth look like on the starter?

There's an actual flywheel inspection cover on the underside of the transmission, jack the car up and get a better look at it. It's the new looking piece of metal in the picture below...

If I was having this problem I would jack the car up and have someone crank it while I was underneath watching the flywheel. It should go without saying but make sure it's supported and NOT in gear...

Eh, didn't realize you had replaced the starter before I commented. The starter you swapped in is going to ride on the grooves cut into your flywheel so its never going to be perfect. Probably don't want to hear this but I think j devil might be on to something. You may need to pull your trans out and make sure everything is normal. Your flywheel already looks like its been beat up pretty badly.

I have a stage 3 clutch in there, I was thinking about buying a lightweight flywheel the the crank in the middle looks to big and the hole In the middle of the lightweight flywheel looks to small
