So tomorrow I am looking at an Eagle Talon that was parked in a garage since 2007 when the head gasket went.

CL add: 1996 Eagle Talon

So what I know:

$500
-1996 Eagle Talon (N/A)
-128,000 original miles
-5 Speed Manual
-No Stereo or speakers
-No Battery
-Bad Head Gasket
-In garage from 2007-summer 2014
-Stored outside under cover from summer 2014-now
-Cracked headlight housing
-small dent & scratch in passenger quarter panel
-Custom paint?

The guy selling this I am assuming bought the car to customize but when the gasket went he ran out of funds. The rims were purchased only a month before the head gasket went. He said he was saving it for him and his son to work on to make it his first car but he now needs it gone. My concern is what do I need to look out for on a car that has been sitting for 7 years? The head gasket can get done over a productive weekend, and the headlight is just about ordering a new one. I know for sure all the fluids need to be flushed. Filters need to be changed. But what else? Before I purchase I want to hook a battery up to it to see if I can get it to try to get it to at least crank. Let me know what else I should do!

Don't Buy. It is not worth fixing even if it is for free. In my opinion, wait and keep looking. And that ad has been posted for almost a month, so, that's your clue.

Fuel pump could be shot from sitting so long (very common). Bring a can of something very flamable to spray into the throttle body while trying to start it up. If the car doesn't start on its own, give this a shot to troubleshoot the fuel pump.

And yeah, I must agree with Yukiz- When you add the mechanical plus all the miss parts? You're better off waiting.
I've found 2g N/T's running fine for $1200 with moderate miles. They are not impossible to locate.

@yukiz I would wait and see but I am on a tight budget and if I were to buy a good condition running one with minimal rust in my area it would be upwards of $2500 - $3000.

Agreed not worth it. However if you must, i would look at rear wheel well rust and strut tower rust. Looks like its been sitting in a forest I would make sure no creatures chewed up the wiring harnesses.

Well like I said its only been outside for around 6 months. And I will try my best to look for rust. The reason I am looking at this is because these cars (in a decent rust free condition) are hard to find for a cheap price in Wisconsin. I wan't to get the whole story from the guy before I make my decision.

420a engines arent exactly known for reliability. Unreliable and slow is not something I would not be motivated to work on. Sure the price may be around $3000 but do they actually sell? If youre thinking of buying this as an investment opportunity I would def. move on.

I would pass if it was me

For cheap this one dose not look that bad mean for cheap. An AWD turbo car will hold its value and be worth putting money in.This one might not be that bad apart from the wiring had some work done changing out the rear bumper for a 2gb eclipse bumper. The engine looks stock which is good plus this one runs It might be worth cheeking out if you can get it under $1,000

However I think it would be best to wait and find a clean nice awd stock turbo car if you have the money.

I have seen that one posted a lot already in a local car enthusiasts page, but there is apparently problems with it. Anyways, I looked at the car today and it didn't look too bad. The guy selling the car bought it used in 1998. He drove it up until 2007 when it broke down. It was his first car, and after loans he said he paid nearly $18,000 for it. My buddy who is a mechanic told me that I would be better off swapping a new engine in than trying to fix the current one. Also, the main thing that turned me off was the strut tower rust. It was pretty bad. I still plan on looking for a different DSM but I am not sure when I will be able to afford one. Thanks for the opinions and help guys!

Keep trying and keep looking they are rare now in days it took me a year to find mine. Look into 1g's cheaper stronger. and look at the classifieds on dsm tuners. Life is to short to drive a boring car don't give up.

There's 2 DSM on ebay. One is a nice looking 97 Talon AWD, the other was an NT Talon. The AWD was under 3K, don't remember the NT, think one was from northern Illinois.
