It wasn't too bad. Even at slow speeds I was still able to steer it easily.

Updates:

I replaced both front and rear crash beams for ones that were in much better condition, as well as all the bolts since they were all broken. Replaced the hatch seal with one in much better condition. Replaced the hatch struts with oem ones, which are amazing. No more broom handle! And I am currently in the process of replacing all the struts and brakes. 1gb calipers, new ebc rotors and pads all around, and jnz tuning brake lines. Of course being the original struts, the rear passanger side gave me hell and the sleeve stayed on the knuckle. Will be grinding it off tomorrow. Drivers side came off with ease.

As the engine sits:

Cleaned the rear end for the newer crash beam and hardware:

New vs old crash beams. Even was able to replace the license plate holder:

Yeah I'm a pretty lucky guy to find a girl that enjoys cleaning 24 year old dirt and grime.

I dropped the subframe today. Will be cleaning it up and painting it as well as the newer rear diff I have laying around tomorrow, which you can see in the background. Will probably pick up some new bushings since I'm in there. Damn you "while I was in there" mods!

Yep, marry that girl. :thumb: Car is looking awesome, I love the amount of work you're putting in. And yeah, those maintenence mods that come up are a pain on the wallet and time, but you'll be happy you got them done.

I cleaned up and wire wheeled the subframe and painted it with some good ole bbq paint that I had around. Decided not to replace the bushings because they are just too expensive. So the old ones will have to do. Since the subframe is out I also cleaned up and painted the bottom of the car where the subframe sits. Will get some pictures tomorrow when it's light out.

Used the all mighty sawzall to cut out the old mounts and metal sleeve so I can put in my new prothane mounts. Also picked up a set of DKS 272 cams yesterday for super cheap.

Sorry for the giant picture, but photobucket won't let me edit anything at the moment.

Did some work on the engine tonight. Installed the throttle body, fuel rail, PTE 780cc injectors, new thermostat housing with all new sensors and thermostat, DKS 272 cams with shims, and some other things. GF also cleaned up the exterior which has gathered a butt load of dust and white paint on it from me painting the garage fridge recently. The other day I replaced all 4 struts with kyb's and installed new SS brake lines on the rear.

And yes, this is a brand new OEM valve cover. Because ocd.

Current interior shot. Won't put it together until I wire up the gauges and rewire the fuel pump.

New clutch/brake pedals because they used to be bare metal, which bugged the crap out of me.

Once a few parts arrive, I'll be able to install the new SS brake lines and 2 piston calipers on the front, and replace the front ball joints which were just destroyed. Very close to putting the engine and new transmission back in.

* Special thanks to Darren from FFWD Connection. I bought the DKS cams from a local and they didn't come with the shims. I emailed Darren after having issues with the shipping at 1am a couple days ago and he replied within 10 or so minutes and we chatted until 2am. He was able to ship me the shims I needed in 2 days without any hassle. Will DEFINITELY buy from them again with that kind of customer service that late in the night.

Have done some more work on the car. Cleaned, painted, and installed all 4 brake calipers and installed new pads/rotors. Installed the new SS clutch line and slave and bench bled the slave so when I install the trans it will be easier. Installed the FP mani as well as the timing components. Just have to actually time it now after priming the pump with a drill. Wired up the wideband and boost gauge and installed them in the ac slot, which was a pain but thankfully I have small hands. Put the interior back together. And started porting the exhaust housing for the 16g.

Primed the pump and did the timing, and now the engine is finally in. Didn't put the trans on with it because I have other things I needed to do to it. Having the engine in will alteast let me clear my room of parts in the mean time.

Man thats soo clean, love the new valve cover

Thanks. It was pretty expensive but worth it to know there isnt any metal hiding under the baffle.

Currently my girlfriend and I are installing the turbo and o2 housing and cleaning up the bay. Will have some pictures later.
Got alot done. Will be mocking up the intercooler and oil cooler tomorrow. Picked up some aluminum to make some brackets too.

That is clean. Great build man. Take care of the engine, run good oil and keep up on preventive maintenance and itll be on one of the best daily drivers. props man

Once the engine is broken in I will use nothing but the best oil. But for now, cheap dead dinosaurs it is!

Shifter assembly was feeling very notchy so I decided to investigate. Turns out the plastic bushings for one of the arms (the one under the snap ring) was gone. All that was left was 24 year old crap. So I took everything apart, picked all the old plastic out, cleaned, greased, and reassembled with new to me bushings I took from junkyard cars. SO much better. Will shift like butter.

I like blue painters tape...

Nice build so far. I just got a decent 1g from my girlfriend's cousin that I've been doing a (ton) of maintenance on since he neglected that part of owning a car. You should of got a nice set of cam gears to go with that shiny valve cover!!

Chris, does your center vent still work with the guages in it? I am trying to find a place to put one more gauge and although I don't have A/C on the car I still use the vent for staying as cool as possible, and where did you pick that up at if you don't mind? Thanks! Nice build log, need to do one on mine since its down for the winter. :thumb:

Thanks. With these cars it seems like most of the time we are fixing other people's mistakes. I thought about some cam gears but money had to be spent on other areas. But when I rebuild the bottom end eventually, I will get some nice ones so I can degree the cams properly.

Can't tell ya. Car hasn't run since I put it in. But from reading other threads with this type of install people have said that it doesn't affect flow too much. For me, windows down and sunroof open has given me enough air flow. But I do like how it makes the gauge install really clean. I bought this off ebay for like $15 shipped awhile ago which is why I got it. And thank you! I am constantly doing work on the car but don't always post here. Im currently working on the front end to install the fmic and oil cooler.

I did a write up on the VRSF FMIC install and retaining the factory oil cooler if you need to see any pictures of how it went in, check it out if you need to or just ask. I will hunt ebay for a similar dash vent setup, it looks perfect! Keep up the log, its a good one.

I ditched the stock oil cooler after rebuilding the engine. Using a B & M cooler now. But I am mounting it in the stock location so I can retain fog lights. Tonight I actually drilled a hole so I can route the new lines.

Worked on the intercooler mounting and cutting up the crash beam. Turns out there is a nice little place to mount the brackets behind the lights. Having no a/c and manual steering made everything so much simpler. Also ordered some bungs to weld into the j pipe for a boost source and fp intake for the valve cover breather port.
