So i'm finally getting around to putting together this 1st gen that I tore apart like 4 years ago. Talk about a brain fart. Sure hope I got it all the right way HA! Everything is going smooth. Pretty much stock. Got the head rebuilt from a local machinist. Honed the block. All new gaskets and seals. New pistons and rings. Balance shaft elimination. New head bolts. New waterpump etc etc... Everything was so caked in oil and from leaks so I used the solvent tank and just about everything that i could. Now that everything is BLINGING i'm having a hard time remembering where little bits and pieces go. Before it wasnt so bad, I could tell by the oil stains where everything went haha. Now im just waiting for my Gates timing belt and tensioner to be delivered and I will install that and be ready to drop the engine in. Just want to make sure I got everything in place before pulling the pin. Long story short, does anybody know where this guy goes?

Behind the cam gears on the intake side of the head (Side of the head that is laying on the table in your pic). That protects the timing components.

I went out and checked and it doesnt seem to line up there. Am I missing a mount or something?

Try lower on the same side. there are two on that side of the engine.[DOUBLEPOST=1414712843][/DOUBLEPOST]It would mount underneath the engine mount bracket with the pulleys attached. You will have to remove it to install the timing shield.

Aha! I think you might be right on that 1. Good thing i asked before doing my timing. Is this the only cover that needs to go on before the timing? I took a look and came up with 4 shields/covers/inspection plates or whatever you wanna call them. From left to right i believe the 1st is the 1 thats going to go under that mount. #2 is transmission inspection cover i believe? #3 is for the exhaust cam. #4 is the starter tranny cover? Am I missing 1 for the timing? I have the plastic timing covers

There are three metal pieces for the timing. The one in your pic, a smaller one above that, and one on the exhaust side behind the cam gear on the head. There is also one that is crescent moon shaped that is the inspection cover between trans and engine block.

Looks like you are missing the small one that goes on top of the intake side you have already identified. You were right on the larger ones (starter, inspection).

Damn. Its a mess out there haha ohwell. I'll look harder. Its gotta be there somewhere. It couldn't have gone anywhere. But this is what happens when you tear a whole car apart and a toyota truck at the same time and leave it in a giant pile for 4 years. :ohdamn: You wouldn't happen to have a part # for it would ya? Thanks for the responses. Much appreciated
