Hey guys I have a 97 gst with a stock dp not cat and 3 inch straight pipe with one resonator. It sounds really nice at low rpms but one I get to anything above 3k the exhuast tone just changes to a very flat note. It doesnt really sound bad but by no means does it sound good either. I want to keep the loud sound with no cat and no muffler but is there anything I can do to make it sound better and still be loud?

loud is not necessarily good my friend. That and the fact that turbo cars aren't as loud as N/A is going to pose a challenge. Open waste gate tube might be something to look into? That or an electronic cut out?

Yeah I understand I just really like the sound of the srt4 and some of the 2.3l n/a mazdas. I know I cant mimic the sounds but im just looking for something a little more throaty. Would getting rid of the res do anything for me. I feel like even a little bit of rasp at this point would sound better than a completely flat note.

imho, srt4s sound like garbage, all the throaty pops and drone - brown note like - sound waves that deficate on your ear drums throwing off your equilibrium, is far from good sounding... Imho... Lol but in all seriousness, a 3 inch down pipe and waste gate dump will probably get you closer to the sounds that you are looking for. And yes removing the resonator would help your cause

thanks for the answer and I respect your opinion on the srt4 but ive never heard anyone who didnt like the sound LOL.

Turn off fuel cut on deceleration, maybe get you closer to the skittle sound. Waste of fuel though IMO, hearing the turbo spool over a nice quiet exhaust is much better.

I second that RadDsm and minimarine09. The srt4 sounds like garbage and the sound of the turbo spooling is just too sweet. I like a quiet exhaust personally, no cops hearing you breeze by. I guess im just burned out by the 2000 people in my city driving hondas that sound like they doin 200 mph when they doin 15. I am not trying to knock you or anything negative whatsoever. Just trying to dissuade you from a loud exhaust.

^^ Uve never been near any of our cars at the track open downpipe have you LOL! That sounds the best hehe!!! ;) And catted really?!? Does anyone really use them here LOL wish I had a clip with my exh system on, once the new motor is done I'll post one sounds killer. Oh I miss this

Oh ya I have a full 3" exhaust going to a nice muffler (wish I could rem brand sorry) and that's it. It's not crazy loud and super deep and throaty. My friends Sti has no cats and some crazy expensive setup and sounds like junk when he hits it LOL. All raspy and super loud and annoying and he gets the fuss all the time. Yet mine which is also open and not crazy expensive (welded up myself) has a amazing sound. I love it and I havnt had one problem with the fuss haha! Just have to know what your working with and buy right!

Dsmkauai, my My buddy had 6 bolt 2g that had a fill exhaust with cats, and it sounded pretty good. But never heard it strait piped on real life. I myself am looking for a 2g gsx

mandrel bent pipe, a couple of resonators, and a Cherrybomb Vortex muffler out back.

no restriction, and you can feel the bass rumble in your chest [the deep, throaty sound everyone wants].

source : my exhaust set-up, 2.5" pipes. not sure how 3" will sound.

I recently switched to a full 3in straight pipe, turbo back. Nothing but the pipe. I like to be loud and obnoxious and this does the job. But my two favorite mufflers are the thermal and atr pitbull (Hard to find). But a 3in downpipe is a must.

Clip of my car straight piped.

You could hack up the vehicle to drop a Dodge 426 Hemi Street motor in that thing if you want a nasty exhaust sound.

Four cylinder motors can't pump the air out like the big V-8's can, plain and simple.

Four cylinders with their exhaust all hacked up sound like a herd of field mice farting in a coffee can.

its so hard with all the diff opinions and vid clips. what i am thinking i want to do is. 3 inch pipe all the way back with a high flow cat and a muffler, no resonators. that should provde with a decent sound with out being to much and give that extra power that i want to get out of a aftermarket exhaust.

Best bet if you can swing it is 3" right away after the flange at the O2 housing. Then high flow cat if needed to a proper dsm blow thru muffler. My old apexi setup sounded great, nice deep throaty turbo goodness. My new setups even better! 4g63t has a great sound for a 4 cyl! Honda wishes they could sound like us!! LOL :)

I'm digging the Thermal R&D I just installed, its deep but still quiet enough for music and gets loud when I step on it.

how would you get more turbo spool sound out of the exhaust I have a 3 inch from o2 to a full 3inch srs cat back. no cat just test pipe res. and straight thru muffler.

3 inch mandrel bent turbo back no cat no res with a cherry bomb glass pack in the middle is what im runnin, loud, deep, and rich, i get compliments from muscle and tuner guys across all brands, i know a couple guys with n/ts tht are runnin cherry bomb glass packs and theres r louder than mine but still sound just as good
