Well since I have my head off anyway, I invested in a blown 16g. When I rebuild it what is the best way to clean the center section? On my 14b I soaked it in purple power which left a light coat of rust everywhere. Is there a better way?

CLR. Love this stuff. Whether it still exists or not is your problem, but I hope it does. Soaked everything I could in this. Although I wouldn't leave any rubber....pretty sure this is only safe for rusted metals.

CLR still exists. I like to use gasoline to clean the oil off. To get the rust off clr works well, but it seems to leave residue. Purple power works well. Dont media blast it, soda blast it unless you have to. 1 grain of media your turbo is done. if the grain of media makes it to the engine your oil whole engine could get trashed.

ive used solvent wash tanks with pumps previously, but those were at my school.

gasoline, kerosene etc is good for removing residue, clr would take care of the rust as well. or you could do like ive done and make a red-neck parts boiler from an old 55 gallon drum and a campfire. mix with a 1:5 ratio degreaser and water, boil away. cleaned 3 engines (yes, entire engines) this way so far and they all are holding up great.

I would think clr would work good, and if it leaves a residue use gasoline to clean it after? Or maybe even pour some seafoam in there since it's actually made to clean up carbon deposits and stuff inside engines

Media blasting works really good, I used a can of brake cleaner, and a roll of shop towels to remove any oily residue or as much as possible before going to machine shop to have it media blasted.

The key to using solvents like purple power, is to make sure you fully dry the part with compressed air afterwards, and if you intend to let the part sit for a while, make sure you oil the part with wd-40, or what ever equivalent you may happen to have lying around, it will help keep it from rusting:D.

Also paint the the chra with a high temp paint, or if you have deep pockets:cool: have it powder coated with a high temp flakes to keep the turbo from rusting.

I wish I had deep enough pockets for powder coating. At this point I'm trying to keep the budget low without sacrificing quality. I don't mind dropping some extra money to do something right though.....
