I just picked up a 91 talon and it came with a depowered steering rack that's disassembled and has the parts in a bag and I would like to use it but have no clue how it goes back together. The rack diagram isn't much help. Can anyone help me out on how this goes back together. Attached are some pics of what I have

Should be easy-peezy. The pain is removing and installing the rack. Just make sure to fill the rack good with quality multi-purpose grease. I will upload pics of when I did this mod but first I'm reposting your pics which I modified for you using windows paint(first time using paint or any similar program). My next post will be of my pictures but they are only of the disassembly. And they are from a crappy cell phone, put should prove very helpful as well. I stole this first picture just for another reference pic for you. I used mobile one fully synthetic multi-purpose grease which was a dark red/purple color.

I'm looking forward to this, so far the posts on how to do it are not easy to follow.

thanks thats very helpful. Does the bushing ( the one above the collar in the pic) need to be put back in as well? As far as i know the shaft was welded, he said it was ready to go. As far as the 3 ports that need plugged yet, do you know what size bolts would fit in their to plug them? Thanks for your help

also how do you tighten that plug that has that huge hex piece in it? Would just getting a nut to put in their work to tighten it since that would be quite a huge hex key

I just put it on a flat surface so I could place a large nut that fits inside the larger hex nut and put a socket half way on the smaller nut turning it which pushes against the inside walls of the larger hex nut tightening it, wish I had a picture for that. Kind of hard to clearly put in words. I'm having a hard time posting my pics, but they're coming.

The collar does go back in, I think that's the one with a small hole in narrow side for the clip to grab onto. The fitting for housing I do not know off hand the size. I just used the existing fittings by taking the brass tube part out and filling the remaining nut with a welder....more pics coming.

so im guessing that bushing needs put back in even though there's fluid anymore to seal, but its probably needs to be there for support?

Oh ya, the bushing does go back in, that'll keep grease in, and contaminates out. Thanx for the likes to my posts guys. Wish I would have made them all big pics instead of thumbpics but they are available for everyone now. Good luck

Your probably very correct on the bushing being needed for support of the unit Boostedtt91.

Does the whole shaft need greased as well or just sections of it?

Honestly, I can't say I know for sure. I packed the housing full and the tube nearly completely full. Was a bit of a pain and messy packing tube full, but I didn't want to give the teeth on shaft a chance to get dry over time. But again, I don't actually know. Any one?

If I do the Miata mod again, I would weld a grease fitting on both ends of the rack for filling/refilling making sure they are accessible without removal from the vehicle. Also the 3 fittings on the housing are at least 2 different sizes, and pipe thread pitched.
